Need math gurus

I have 10.5 inch scrappy blocks that I want to sew on point (finish 10”). What size blocks do I cut for sides and corners?

I have sewn 2.5” blocks together (5 across and 5 down) squares and want to sew them in a layout to give a solid diagonal look across the quilt. Can I use a long strip of background to make it look seamless or should I cut the background blocks into squares? When the scrappy blocks are sewn together it will look like a long band and wondered if I could mimic the long band look by cutting a single piece for the background.

Hope i’ve explained this well enough. Thanks for your help!

There is a great chart on Bonnie Hunter’s site that calculates setting and corner triangles for on point settings. Look at quiltville.com. Look for on point settings under tips and techniques

Try this link. Not sure what you're thinking with background fabric so can't offer advice.

While I am unsure of your question about the background, I can answer your Math question about the setting Triangles.

For a finished 10 " block size according to EQ, four setting triangles for the sides can be cut out of a 15 3/8 inch square with two diagonal cuts (an X so to speak).

Two corner triangles would be gotten by a single diagonal cut on a 7 15/16 inch block. That would be in a perfect world - lol.

That being said ... I would never cut them that close. 15.5 and 8 would still be too close for me - I would cut them a bit larger and square them up and trim them before assembling the rows.

Hope it helps

Jan in VA did a nice tutorial on setting quilt blocks on point for us in this link: https://www.quiltingboard.com/tutori...y-t304155.html

She was on the QB just 2 weeks ago... maybe she's on vacation?
