In Need of Measurement for a quilt

So Im wanting to make a rag quilt for a dorm size bed (twin xl long) and i really need help of how many yard of each fabric i need and second can you use cotton or flannel for a rag quilt I wanting to do 4 colors.

I made a rag quilt using one layer of cotton (for the top) and 2 layers of flannel. I used 2 different colors of the flannel that matched the colors in my top.

did the cotton fray as much as the flannel will because im wanting to do an nfl quilt and i can only find cotton and fleece. no flannel :(

IMO, the flannel frays more. I'm making a Cowboy throw with cotton and thn 2 layers of flannel on the inside. Just have to prewash the flannel 3 times (and iron before cutting) to get the shrink out of it.

It does fray as you can see in the picture I posted. The flannel does most of the fraying though. The quilt in the picture was washed once after completing and that is how much ragging it did. I have washed it a couple more times since I made it and it still plumps up a little more each time.

Fleece will curl but it doesn't fray.

And definately wash your flannel first to get the majority of the shrinkage out. I didn't quilt "X"s in the squares either.

As far as I know, fleece does not fray/rag.

I have another question can you use a flannel sheets to make a rag quilt. ( Im a poor (kinda) college student) would that work like flannel fabric

You can use whatever you want. Here in Poland I have to get creative and I bought pj bottoms and tops (for about $1 apiece) and collected for about a year--from the used clothing store. I collected and collected, buying a couple every time I went to the used clothing store. I cut when I got them home. After 1 year, I laid out my squares and was able to make 7 rag quilts out of the squares I had--in color coordinated fabrics.

So, YES, you can use a flannel sheet. Since flannel shrinks, do wash it first, if it is new. The advantage of buying used pjs is that they had already been washed and washed and wouldn't shrink anymore--but of course it is necessary to wash once or twice after finishing, just to help make it all raggedy.
