There was a pattern I wanted to buy that was only available on Esty. So I created a log-in and placed my order and used Pay-Pal. Very easy. Similar to E-bay, just all have a set price.

Artful Home is really going to be out of most of our price ranges, based on comments of prices too high on Etsy.
Tho I love some of the stuff I see there, it is too rich for my purse. |

I purchased 2 Moda wrapped in Paisley layer cakes for 26.99 each from thesewingshack. Very smooth transaction.

I have been selling on Etsy for several years and I have been happy there. I sell FABRIC and PATTERNS and BUTTONS - they sell OK. I think my prices are fair compared to others I have seen. I would sell my fabric here, but since I have a shop ...not allowed any more. If I buy reasonably - I pass the savings on.
The fabric was originally just a way to "destash" what I don't use, so I list it for a fraction of the selling price. Most of mine is out of production. I get a lot of traffic from here....thanks for looking! If you want say hi when you buy. |
I have used Etsy and have been pleased. I only purchased fabrics. I did have some issues with fabric not arriving as pictured due to lighting and monitor settings. (fabric looked white with turquoise in photo, was cream and aqua in person).
Also, Etsy has you check out separately with each 'store'. So you only realize shipping savings if you buy multiples from the same one. |
I have bought a lot on etsy. I don't like to deal with auctions. I don't know what their fees are for sellers, but there aren't any for buyers. With both etsy and ebay, there are shipping costs, and paypal takes a cut from sellers no matter where you use it. The only bad experience I've had on etsy was one seller who took the money and didn't send the merchandise. Etsy closed her store and paypal wasn't able to get my money back. Luckily, it was only $6. I visit etsy every day and not just for quilting related items. I have heard that bigcartel is another option for selling and has lower fees.

I've looked at Etsy a few times but have never made a purchase. It is too confusing to find what I want to look at and very often is quite pricey.
I much prefer Ebay. |
I did have some of my sewing and jewelry on etsy and never got a bite. Don't know why, I guess too much to choose from.

I have an Etsy store & enjoy it. Things aren't selling as quickly as I'd like but it's "part-time" for me - after my day job, running after my daughter, etc. I have purchased things there with no problems whatsoever. I think they have wonderfully unique things (plus some wierd stuff if you like that). Fees are much more reasonable than Ebay.

I have bought fabric and jewelry on Etsy. I found better deals on Etsy then on Ebay. The sellers I have dealt with have been just great.

Recently I've been thinking of selling my fabric postcard creations on Etsy, there are alot there for sale. Which might be the problem. [quote] Go for it. The cost of posting on Etsy is about 20 cents per item. My DD is selling crochet hats and diapers covers and she priced her items slightly under others listed. She makes item then posts them and sells that item. Her's are fairly quick to make so she can make one to order. I on the other hand made the coloringbook bags 4 of about 10 patterns so I could list quanity as more than 1. Problem with that was I had too much money tied up in project. I would suggest that you make few, list and see how they sell. Sounds like taking custom orders would be too hard. But remenber that paypal also charges a fee. |
Just looked at that QuiltDeal.com and I think that will be hard to sell on because of the price...$50 a month is way too much for me. I will check it out when it opens and see if they are bringing a LOT of traffic...then it would be worth it. One thing I have learned in the 11 years I have sold on the internet is that if a site expect you the seller to bring all the traffic to yourself then it is very hard to make enough money.

Good point about monthly fee at quiltdeal.com, I really hadn't gone to look to check it out.
Thanks for pointing it out. I think as far as fabrics, patterns and anything from my stash, I'll just sell it on the yahoo group sewitsforsale. There are no fees at all to sell sewing / quilting related items but NO crafted or handmade items. |
I quit selling stuff on eBay after they jacked the closing fees to nearly 9% per item. That's way too high for my taste. Plus now they are going to take a percentage of the shipping fees on top of that. (a lot of people were exaggerating the shipping fees on their own to try and make money that Ebay previously wasn't taking a cut of.. I am guessing that's why Ebay is taking a cut now.) I like Etsy myself.. and just like buying fabric on eBay, you have to know the value of what you are buying so you don't over pay.

Even better yet, sell our stash stuff here!

I have bought fabric from Etsy quite a few times lately. I love it. I can find any type of fabric by search words. Etsy also asks me if I'd like to see the prices in Euros, and does the conversion for all items during that session, for any seller. Also prices for shipping are very good. I live in Finland and the postage from the US is usually about the same as if I'd ordered domestically! I by small amounts, about a yard at a time. So far I've received my orders in about a week which is only a couple of days more than most shops take here. I am very pleased with Etsy store.

I sell Middle Eastern embroidery patterns on Etsy that I design myself and am very happy with my little shop. It's a very part-time thing and is just a nice way for me to show something of one of my great interests. The upkeep and closing costs are tiny.
I had also sold them on Ebay, but Ebay stopped allowing the selling of downloadable items, like my patterns. Don't know why, though. I buy lots of quilting fabric on Ebay, and have met some very nice sellers and kit designers that way. |
I have posted there and buy from there. It is like any other site, you just have to watch where it is coming from, cost, shipping pricing. I would not hesitate to order, if all looks well.
Selling is not so easy. I have sold one item after listing for about 3 months now. I do way better on e-bay. |
