Need opinions on border
2 Attachment(s)
I'm making this little stash quilt (free pattern called Garden Gate). It would be great if I could finish it without buying any fabric. The only possibility I have on hand is this midnight blue solid, which is already cut into these strips. What do you think? I think I have enough of this light green to do a thin inner border.
If not this midnight blue, what type of fabric do you think I should look for for the border (I would have to shop for it on line). |
I think those two borders will look good. For the purposes that you have made the quilt, being to use up stash fabric then this will work out fine. If you go the way of ordering fabric online then a dark green (one that is the same value as the dark green strip) for the last border would look nice. It is very pretty and would make a great wheelchair quilt or lap quilt for someone.

I like it without a border. Is that an option?
|
I like it too. should work well.

I think the blue looks good. Go for it.

It's a fun scrappy.
ITA to go with the midnight blue against the blocks. However, I would suggest a 1/4 turn on the top right black, and also the 2nd from the bottom on the left, so that you do not have their dark edges against your dark blue. Otherwise, they will kind of merge into the border. Your light green would work with it too ... do you have enough of the midnight to go .... midnight, green, then midnight again? |
I like the dark fabric for the border
|
i also like it without the border
|
Guess I'm going to be the odd one out. I think the dark blue will overwhelm the quiltif used for a border unless it is a very narrow border. I would use the light green and, perhaps, bind in the dark blue.
|
Thanks all for your suggestions! Size is not an issue, so I could go without a border.
|
Here's another vote for no border
The quilt is fun and zesty and I like it just how it is right now! |
I agree with using just the dark blue but IMHO no wider than the blue and yellow squares used on some blocks. Fun quilt!
|
I vote no border also. What a fun and lively quilt!
|
wow....I don't like the blue at all. I don't see that blue in your quilt?? Your quilt has colors that are light and airy - fun, beachy...spring like, summer like...
To me, the blue is visually heavy. I don't think it's right because it's visually too heavy, overpowering compared to the block in the center....which are great... |
I think the dark blue is too strong for the quilt. The green is too soft. I would bind in the dark and call it pretty.
|
I would do a narrow border of the green, then a narrow border of the midnight blue (maybe 1/3 or 1/2 the width you've shown). The green will make the centre "float", and the narrower blue will frame it nicely without overwhelming it.
I really like your quilt! |
I put the blue all around and didn't like it at all. I'm going to mull it over a while, and move on to something else in the meantime.
Thanks so much, everyone! |
I like it without the border but, that being said, I usually use one as I think it stabilizes the project. I'm not a fan of the dark border but I like your lime green.
|
I would use the green as a border, and bind with the dark. If you have any leftover pieces from the blocks, try to incorporate a couple into the binding, just as a point of interest and fun. Nicely done!

This was my thinking as well. Then you wouldn't have any dark strips touching the dark blue and getting "lost" . I love the fresh colors in your quilt, and adore blue and green together. |
If size is not an issue, I would go borderless. After birthing it, I would STID in the first strip line to create the illusion of a border (and to hold it securely). If you need the larger size, I might make the green inner border just a tad wider and the blue just a bit narrower - but the colors work fine for the borders.

I am odd man out. I always use borders. Except for donation quilts that are the right size without borders. If you keep it, it may bother you without borders.
I personally would use a thin strip of the light green and then a little wider border of the blue. I think that would be much nicer than no borders. Your quilt your way. |
I read everyone's opinion but honestly, I think that the border is way too dark. It does nothing for the quilt and really distracts from it. I really think you should go a bit lighter or no borders at all.
