Hi everyone,
I have been so busy helping husband harvest our garden and decorating my guest room after finishing the AtticWindow quilt. Took a little rest from quilting. Now I am doing a twin size quilt for a young girl. Colors are very bright. The butterflies are applique. I have sewn with small stitches the Buttierflies wings and body so they are attached to the block. I have a good stablerizer under block, that washes away. Now I want to satin stich the butterfly wings and body. But oh so many colors. Dont' really want to use Black. Except for the antennia. So should I use different colors like I have on the blocks? Or should I just use one Dark color on All? Sashes are Orange and Border is Yellow. Binding will be Green with hot pink Dots. Thats what she wants!!! Don't want to use the Blanket stitch. I love doing the satin and I believe it will make the wings and body stand out. Give me some options PLEASE so I can compare and decide. Thank you all BillsBonBon |
That is sooooo pretty and bright and happy! I always have a hard time deciding on colors, but I think a nice shiny thread close to or matching the butterfly would look nice. Or, you could pick up a color from somewhere else on that blocks butterfly. I am sure you will choose just the right thing as you have done beautifully on the blocks themselves.

Wow -- beautiful blocks!!! I think it would look neat if every butterfly had a bright, unmatching color -- like pink stitching on the yellow butterfly. It would be in keeping with the other bright colors in the quilt :D
But whatever color(s) you use, I'm sure it will look "just right"! |
I like the idea of a bright contrasting color of stitching. Such as a bright yellow on the red butterfly etc. Like sewjoyce said.
|
How cute is that!! I love your quilt and all the bright colors. I like the idea of different colors around the butterflies but I'm so anal I'd have to match the thread to the wings. Whatever you do it's going to look great-please post pictures when you finish.
|
I think they would look so cool with contrasting thread. It would really make them stand out and follow your bright color scheme.

I always coordinate the color to what I am appliqueing, but, I think if you use the color of the body of the butterfly for the outside and the color of the outside for the body, I think that would look cute. You could try it on a test block to see how you would like it.
Other than that, it's a very cute quilt and I cannot wait to see it finished. |
i sewed my butterflies to a black back ground an done a satin stich with a veragated thread an i just loved the way the butterflies turned out.
|
This is ADORABLE!!! LOVE IT!!
I always match my thread color to my fabric. That way any mistakes I make won't show up so much. |
I think I would use thread the same or slightly darker than the wings, unless it's a print, then just pull out a color from the print. You could also use a co-ordinating color on Butterflies you don't have a matching thread for.

Nice quilt ~ since there are so many bright colors, I probably would stick with one color for all the blocks ~ I like the bright shiny blue that is sitting on the pink block in the lower right corner. Whatever you decide it will continue to be a nice quilt.

I think I like tirnhi's idea too, for what it's worth. I have been studying the blocks and I really think that would really pull it together. It is so adorable, I can hardly wait to see it finished!

Beautiful quilt! I say for that quilt the more color you use the better! Make it LOUD! Contrasting colors get my vote.
|
I agree with Dizzy, I would use a bright variegated thread.
|
That's a lot of focal points to have that much contrast. I would pick out a few to have contrasting thread and the rest matching.
|
Something I like to do: get some clear vinyl or Glad press n seal, but I think the Glad might not be as easy to see through. Use an dry-erase marker, put the vinyl over your butterfly and use different color markers, to 'audition' your colors.
I like Terri's idea, and I like the idea of variegated too. Satin stitching on butterflies is puuurrrty! |
Ditto what sewjoyce said. Different contrasting colors on each butterfly.
What a beautiful, colorful, cheerful quilt.LOVE your butterflies.

The option which picks out colours from the butterfly (eg pink on yellow)has my vote - fits in with the rest of the bright colours.
|
How about using thread the color of the "body" of the butterfly---with shiny thread of course.
|
i love bright colors, but i think with this many bright colors it needs some one color to pull it all together. color of your choice, but dark enough to be seen. maybe the color of the darkest border.
that said, it is beautiful, adorable, wonderful, charming and fun! what more could a little girl want? |
LOVE! LOVE! LOVE! those butterflies!!!!!! No matter what color they flutter around with, they will be spectacular!!!
|
Use a bright yellow for all of them. That would make them stand out :D
Nice pretty butterflies  |
Tough question. I like the thread you have pictured with each block. Can't wait to see what you do.

With all these options it will be tough to decide. Most of the time I try to match the background color of the applique. I did a butterfly quilt with only 2 fabrics for the wings and a different color for the body. I matched the body color. Here's a picture to give you a visual.
I'm sure whatever you do will be wonderful! |
I like mrsjdt's idea about using thread the color of the body. It would make the wings pop with a contrasting color, but still tie in with each block.

I think I would go with a green to match background fabric so it doesn't compete with your beautiful butterflies.

I think I would use the irridesent thread also!
|
Hey, not to change the subject completely....but..I keep looking at that cat and can't figure out if he's had a complete haircut, minus the neck and under-chin area, or if he's some breed I've never heard about that has a "lion's mane". I love cats of all kinds, though I only have 3 now. But yours is a stumper. Ruth

I have to agree with sewjoyce also. If you use a color close to the color of the butterfly, it won't stand out and define it.
