Need opinions on sashing
2 Attachment(s)
I'm making a sampler wall hanging for my sewing room (1 deep purple wall - which is *probably* where this will hang, 1 mossy green wall, and 2 light green walls). I have four blocks, and I'm trying to decide between a solid seafoam cotton and a tone-on-tone white print for the sashing. I think the seafoam goes very well with the fabrics of the blocks, especially the mottled fabric I used in all the corners, but my DH is concerned that it's too much green. So I'm wondering what you all think. (And figuring that it'll be a miracle if it's not a 50:50 vote!)
This is my first time posting pics here, so hopefully they come through! ;) |
I really like the white for the sashing as its enough of a color difference to set the blocks apart to make them stand out. Very pretty color choices.
IF you use the light green the upper right block will get lost in it. You need the white. I like that upper left block. New one to me.
I agree with your hubby. The green seems to blend all together - sort of doesn't let the blocks pop. Hope that makes sense.
Green is my favorite color, and you've used it effectively, but as a sashing I think the two greens will all "mush" together( don't laugh - it's a technical term!).
Not laughing at all - "mush" is totally a technical term!
I like the tone on tone. It highlights the other colors well. I think the seafoam blends in too much. Just my humble option.
Gayle, it's the "Prairie Queen" block from www.quilterscache.com. I wasn't too sure about it when I was making it, but it's really grown on me!
Hubby is right. Go figure!! :)
I would go for a purple but I know that's not an option. So white it is.
I like the idea of a purple, but I don't want an excuse to buy more fabric. ;) I'd rather use what I have. And I'm concerned that purple sashing will be too much against a very deep purple wall. You have no idea how much it took for us to decide to go with a purple wall! We're normally terrified of color on walls, and apparently we went nuts in this room!
I'd go with a deep, rich purple for the sashing, so the purples in the blocks stand out
The borders can be something entirely different (lighter) so that the piece will stand out against the wall. The green is too much green, the white isn't enough contrast. I'd go with something textural for the outside borders that you pull from inside the quilt blocks. Lovely blocks!
I vote with for the white. Your husband may be right, this time. The white does give some separation.
Prefer the green. I don't care for the + look of the white.
purple I like to, but if buying more fabric is not on the list go with the white
When I first looked, I thought purple too.
The green would blend too much for my taste. I guess I would have to choose the white but really I wouldn't choose that either. Even a darker shade of green would be more to my taste than the white but I would definitely rule out the seafoam green. Tara |
I would go with purple, but since it's not in your palette, go for White!
If those are your only two choices, white is it. If you happen to have either a darker green or purple in your stash, that would be my first choice and then use the lighter colors for a boarder around it all. This would then set it off more on the dark purple wall.
Definitely the white!!

I agree with Martina...personally, I'd use a purple to make the green blocks pop!
White is my vote as well.
I prefer the white or cream over the green also, but like madquilter, I thought ooh would like to see what the purple would do too!
I definitely think the white so your blocks don't get lost.
i vote for the white. the yellowy color is too close to the color of the blocks
The green blends in with the blocks, so no real separation, the white is too light, again, no definition of blocks. I'm with the others, you need a dark color to really separate the blocks and make all of them shine. A purple or even a very dark green - something to show off the four blocks, instead of having them all seem to meld together. Then use the light green as an outer border, to lighten it up and make the whole thing pop against the dark purple wall.
P.S. I love the idea of a dark purple wall - you should let your inner colorist out to play more often! |
I like the second one. makes it pop. joyce j
Count my vote for white! (very pretty blocks BTW!)
Minority opinion here: I'd choose a medium lavender print with cream and light green accents.
My first thought was a purple also. But the green your blocks will be lost. But I think more contrast then the white gives would really set off your beautiful blocks.
