am i crazy for using a homespun(or at least thats what i think it is) fabric in a paper pieced block?? have only used this type of material in rag quilts so i was wondering if its ok to use this in a paper pieced block in a regular quilt.

pscott392 11-29-2011 11:45 AM

I think it looks really good.

what worries me is the stretch in that kind of fabric...and later on when its time to send off to the LAQ(i think i have decided this is the route im going) will it be hard to actually quilt...as you can tell, im a beginner with this kind of stuff

I would stablize the give or stretch with some starch prior to any cutting. The smaller stitch lenght used for paper peicing will help in the strenght of the seams.. I am a bit concerned about the raveling from using a loose weave fabric , I would opt for more dense quilting or if quilting on a regular machine quilting that is on the homespun rather than the denser weave fabric. WhenI have sewn/pieced homespuns I used a larger seam allowance, so maybe not trim as close , and that would resolve the issues. .. but I would still starch prior.
FYI - its looks beautiful so far.

I have no answers for you, I just wanted to say that your block is very pretty

The block is pretty, can't answer any of your questions as I've not sew on homespun at all.

the combination of fabrics that you chose is very pleasing :)

thanks you!! i thought so too, that's why i'm kinda bummed that this is probably not a good idea. i just worry that after all that work, it might not quilt well.

I see no reason you can't use it. This is a lovely block. Thanks for sharing.

well, the worry is, with the homespun fabric being more loosely woven and stretchier than the other, that might pose a problem when it comes time to remove the paper foundation and add the borders and quilting.

Would it be possible to add a frame of other type of fabric such as cotton around each block to kind of frame it and hold each block together??? I would think this would help with the stretching or at least keep it under control.

That looks beautiful! You came up with a great idea!

Lorettan 11-29-2011 04:49 PM

I think i will probably not take a chance with this fabric combo. Will have to go thru my fabric stash

TanyaL 11-29-2011 04:58 PM

Can you back the homespun with a very light weight stablizer?

Jackie R 11-29-2011 05:27 PM

I have no advise either but it's a beautiful block and will make a beautiful quilt - love the soft look of your colors and fabrics.

nannyrick 11-29-2011 05:34 PM

Ooooooh I like that. Beautiful job.

jaciqltznok 11-29-2011 05:37 PM

just spray starch it before you take the paper off and you should be fine!

sewbeadit 11-29-2011 06:05 PM

It looks nice to me. You can use anything you like in a quilt. The only thing I would be worrying about a bit is the raveling of the threads on the cut edges.

Lorettan 11-29-2011 06:16 PM

ok, here's a bit of an update...i took that half block, the one pictured in my initial post, put a scrap piece of batting behind it, and just did some quilting inside the shapes. ya know, after i did that, the fabric didn't stretch much at all...so, i might be ok using it...so happy as i really had my heart set on that combo.

GwynR 11-29-2011 06:19 PM

Glad you decided to use it, it's beautiful! You can make it work!

nycquilter 11-30-2011 10:49 AM

I've combined fabrics in the past without a problem when it's time to quilt it. I don't see why this would change for the paper piecing part. You should be fine, at least IMHO
