need quilt ideas...

Need ideas for a quilt for a 4 yr. old for Christmas next year. She definitely wants it to be Purple, but don't know where to go to get some ideas for a pattern. Help! Mariah

Now the question is does she have discriminating tests for quilt blocks? If not how complicated and large donyou want to go? I have done a very very complicated bed quilt for my dd and now am finishing up a dnp cut on differently. There are thousands of ways to go. Go out and pick up two purple fabrics that you a love and think she will like the go from there once you have a couple fabrics you can get an idea of how many more you will need for what ever pattern you end up with. I found this works well because you might have a fabric that works better in one pattern than another. This is just me though.

As for simple patterns for an older "toddler" I would say a dnp or rail fence. If you want to get more complicated there is one called summers sun on quilters cache. I love it for little girls. I made it for my dd as part of a bigger pattern for my DDS bed quilt. It can look like a flower when you are done depending on fabric placement.

This is a darling quilt and can be customized with size, color, graphic, etc. Jelly roll friendly and no pattern needed. Just a thought https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?f...4490162&type=1

Try modabakeshop.com. They have kinds of lovely patterns that are easy to make. Also Missouri Star quilt company. Enjoy the process. :)

You could start with buying purple embroidered little girls. Joanne puzzle has some really cute ones there on E Bay. I have used a few sets for my niece's quilts and they love them. She is reasonable and has lots of her blocks on sale now. She does lovely work and I have bought many of her block sets.

Here is one link to some real cuties...

Just look for the little girl ones and ask the gal to make them in purple.

Well, my default quilt is a purple quilt. Let me see if I can find any pictures that might give you ideas. Yup, here are a few.

Well, of course, I forgot to say what they were. In order they are What Knot by Rita Fishel, puzzle quilt (don't recall where I found that), Take Five, hmmm...just a focus fabric and four patch, and Trip around the World. You can't go wrong with purple quilt. A Rail Fence in three shades of purple is also good, but I can't find my picture of it.

Hope this is helpful?

For little girls, I usually make a large Sunbonnet Sue, dressed up in a fancy dress, bonnet and apron; I use lots of flowers and balloons, sometimes adding honey bees or little birds flying around. And sometimes I will add the little girls' name vertically on one side or the other. They are cute and don't take a really long time...only about 10 hours or so. And the little girls and their Moms really love them....

I have really gotten into the half hexi either as hexagons or the friendship braid. I got the 5 inch and 10 inch from Missouri Star Quilt company and then had one custom made for 8 inch which is my favorite size. I did the 5 inch in flannel for a little boy and it is just so adorable.

I made a purple Diamond Patch. You can buy the pattern here http://www.pleasantvalleycreations.com but I did it without buying it. I just used 5" and 2.5" squares and Quiltville.com chart for the corner and setting triangles. http://quiltville.com/onpointmath.shtml I added an extra column of blocks as I like my little ones quilts to have room to grow with them.

I have done several Sunbonnet Sue quits for family members, from previously worn clothes. However, I don't see why one done is one color scheme wouldn't work just as well. And, she may think they are her "dollys"

How about an I spy quilt? Fun for her age!

I like Dina's purple trip around the world. Depending on your skill level, you could do a purple bargello.

adding that it's just made with alternating 9 patch and snowball blocks.

Dina, what is the last quilt in the pictures. Trip around the world? Where can I find the pattern for that?

I want to make one in greytones. I have the fabric, I just need the pattern :)

Dolphyngyrl 01-31-2014 07:54 PM

Dina I love your purple quilts, its my favorite color

Dina 02-02-2014 12:48 PM

Yes, it is Trip around the World. I got mine from a book, let me see if I can find the name of it. But you should be able to find the pattern free online, I would think. Yes, it is from Tradition with a Twist by Blanche Young and Dalene Young Stone. The pattern name is Sunshine and Shadow....but it is basically a Trip around the World.

Thanks for having me look for the pattern, as I have found another pattern in this book that I MUST make! :)

However, like I said, I suspect you can google and find a pattern you can start using right now.
