I want to make a lap quilt from these butterflies. Any suggestions for sashing or what should I add.

OH they are gorgeous!!!well, you could do more black for one. are you going to do them in rows as they are or cut each one apart? If apart, you could add different colors of sashings around them for more color.

catsden 03-03-2017 03:06 PM

Those are beautiful. I would use black for sashing.

osewme 03-03-2017 03:34 PM

Oh, I love butterflies. Those are absolutely beautiful. Where did you get them? I would do black sashing as I think black will really make the colors pop out.

I love them!!! Black would be the obvious choice for sashing. Alternately, you could expand on them. I just got some parrot fabric which I am using as the centers for saw tooth stars. I've done the same with friendship stars.

If giving them to ME is not an option, then I vote for black sashing too. Plenty of color already there, don't need to detract from them.

Kassaundra 03-03-2017 04:31 PM

My first choice would be black, a second choice would be a leaf print w/ dark green leaves and black background. Not a "hard" print w/ definite lines (like the butterflies sharp focus) more of a blurred focus like the background in the butterfly fabric.

Have you thought about setting them "on point" and separating them with an Attic Windows-type lattice? By setting them on point and fiddling around with the angles at which they're flying, I think they'll look more life-life and your quilt will have more energy.

I'm now going to try to post a photo or two of a quilt I made using the type of lattice I recommend: UH OH. THOUGHT I KNEW HOW TO DO IT. WRONG! WILL NOW LOOK FOR INSTRUCTIONS AND WILL TRY AGAIN.

sewbizgirl 03-03-2017 05:11 PM

I might try framing them with some color, and then black. Going to be so pretty.

sushi 03-03-2017 05:13 PM

I read the directions and still can't upload my photographs. They're probably in the wrong format.

Instead, here's a link to the pattern so you can see how the lattice works. http://www.connectingthreads.com/pat...__D10091D.html

FWIW, I think the lattice idea will be considerably more effective with your butterflies that it is with either their flowers or mine.

Thanks everyone for your help. I am going to do the lattice idea and set on point. I orderd the pattern from Connecting thread and I can download. I need something to follow so I don't mess up. I have six more squares that are cut individual and I will cut all the other apart for this pattern. I was not sure so I left them in rows until I decided. I got this fabric at a discount store in Phoenix where they have lots of fabric from al over. Some is just folded pieces and you have to dig. This piece had a tear on on block on the outside where the the border is. With out that one I will have 29 blocks and they are just a bit over 7 1/2 inches square. Thanks again sushi for pointing me to that pattern.

Good choice! I think setting them on point will really make those beautiful butterflies life-like - much more than just sashing them "the normal way"!

I for one can't wait until you get it completed and post pictures. I agree that the lattice and setting on point is a good idea.

Anniedeb 03-03-2017 09:22 PM

Those butterflies are awesome! Agree with the lattice pattern set on point and can't wait to see it finished!!

nabobw 03-04-2017 05:25 AM

This would be beautiful done like Sushi wrote.
Have you thought about setting them "on point" and separating them with an Attic Windows

Is there anything on the selvedge that would tell the manufacturer? That is so pretty. Sometimes things like this can be found by searching the internet. I love the butterflies and the pattern is perfect. Can't wait to see it when you have it done.

Oh my, somewhere in my sewing cave I have that pattern, and if I remember correctly those corners are hsts......great idea for the butterflies.......

Jane Quilter 03-04-2017 09:04 AM

great idea.....please post when top is assembled.

quilterpurpledog 03-04-2017 09:06 AM

I see several design opportunities. I like the quilt in the comment by sushi. I really like the colorfulness of these beautiful butterflies. I think I would sash each one of them with solids or blenders from each picture. When you join them together it would be a beautiful rainbowed effect. Then, I would use a floral with lots of colors for the border to bring it all together.

zozee 03-04-2017 09:12 AM

Have you considered auditioning the various colors in the prints? I can see royal blue, orange, pink, yellow, greenish-yellow, in addition to black. Might be that the lattice in one or more of those colors would really "sing."

I checked out the pattern and agree with you that putting the butterflies on point would be really interesting and give a lot of energy to the quilt.

I love the idea on point with Attic Windows. It's going to be gorgeous. I'm thinking about downloading that pattern just in case I ever run across any fabric like yours.

Beautiful butterfly fabric. What about cutting up the fabric squares and adding sashing to make it look like they are flying by a window. Hope you understand what I am talking about.

Jordan 03-05-2017 01:58 PM

I had another thought----what about making attic windows with each small block?

You could do black sashing with multiple colors of cornerstones.

Karamarie 03-05-2017 07:44 PM

Can't wait to see that quilt. Great ideas given already.

suern3 03-06-2017 02:56 PM

Your butterflies will be beautiful in the pattern sushi linked! I can't wait to see it when you're done. I'm with you on using a pattern, I have to have one, too.

sJens 03-06-2017 04:13 PM

Beautiful blocks--I would use black sashing too.
