Need some help picking a backing

So, over the last Virtual Quilting weekend, I put together a top with some blocks made of roll strips. As I showed my progress while messaging to my sister, she wowed about it in a way that made me realize it has to be hers. She is usually my 'go to' for color questions when I hit a wall. But, since it's going to be her quilt, I don't want to spoil the surprise when she receives it. I *know* it has to be a Kaffe Fassett print - she loves them so much. Right now I'm bouncing around with the 4 possible fabrics: Millefiori -in Orange or Brown, Paperweight in Brown, or Roman Glass in Gold. Pix below.

So far I think his smaller prints will be less "over the top" (oh, pun unintended, lol!) but I'm open to convincing if the colors are right! Color's so subjective, but could you throw me an opinion, please?

Pretty top! I like the third from your top with the darker background. Use which ever backing you like with your top and binding.

suern3 12-01-2020 02:50 PM

My first glance choice is the one with the dark background. Seems like the dark ties it to the front, to me. Of course, you can't go wrong with any of your choices. Very pretty top! Lucky sister!

I also like the third choice. (I was picturing that type of color even before I scrolled down enough to see your pictures!)

sewingsuz 12-01-2020 04:49 PM

I also like the third!

sewbizgirl 12-01-2020 04:52 PM

I like the middle picture with the bigger motifs, but any of these would be great.

dunster 12-01-2020 05:31 PM

I like the first one shown, the bright gold one. A close second is #2.

Sharongn 12-01-2020 06:14 PM

Pretty quilt! I like the 4th one best... The gold color. Next would be the 3rd one... The dark brown.

Your top has a lot of earth tones in it and the pattern is very linear. I’m recommending the orange one both for color and pattern. I think the large circles are a nice contrast to all the straight lines on the front.

Go go bold, Orange Millefori (picture 1) for the win!

It will also make the top look "cooler" in comparison, while the colors still shine through :)

SusieQOH 12-01-2020 07:30 PM

Impossible to choose because I love them all! :)

My choice of backing usually is limited to "do you have enough of this to do the job"???

:D I know this should be my answer, but I really want to make something special for my sis. Right now, I'm (knock wood) still employed so I'm going to spoil her a little with some KF prints! Eventually, I'll need to tighten the spending belt, for sure.

Thank you all for the input, and many good reasons to consider your choices! I'll post it when I've finished (I hope in time for Christmas or not long after).

all would be great choices. I preferthe 1st or last, more of a gold ish color.

Joset 12-02-2020 05:07 AM

i like the third one you have in your message

Quiltwoman44 12-02-2020 06:04 AM

I would buy the second one just to have it! Love that one. The third or fourth would be great on your quilt though.

Jordan 12-02-2020 06:22 AM

any of them would work but my personal choice would be the last one from the picture of the top. Good luck to you and please share what you decide.

Waal 12-02-2020 06:28 AM

I like the third one with the brown background. Brown always seem to blend for me.

toogie 12-02-2020 09:28 AM

I guess I'm the only one that likes the golden colors.

ibex94 12-02-2020 09:48 AM

I think #3 and #4 may be too dark if what you want is for the Kaffe Fassett fabric to stand out for your sister.

Three Dog Night 12-02-2020 11:29 AM

I like the 3rd one over from the top, the one with the dark background.

RedGarnet222 12-02-2020 06:20 PM

The brown one for sure. Then I can match my threads both top and bottom to quilt it.

katiebear1 12-03-2020 07:13 AM

I like the darker one too. That is just the one my eye naturally went to.

LisaInOhio 12-03-2020 07:59 AM

I like the first one, the orange. I think it adds a lot of warmth and if she is a KF fan, I think it offers the best (and just right amount) of punch.

Decision Reached!

I started playing with the leftover scraps of the quilt to make a throw pillow, and when I laid them out against the Orange Millefiori, it just looked 'right'. (Test picture below) I agree, the brown was probably the most neutral, and maybe *my* choice, but this is for my color-loving sis, it's got to have punch! Fabric is ordered and now I wait!

Karamarie 12-04-2020 06:52 AM

I think you could just ask your sister for advice, then she'll really be surprised when she gets it.https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images/smilies/shock.png

Irishrose2 12-05-2020 09:36 AM

I like the second one best. Lots of turquoise on the front and I like the contrast of #2 with that.

You can still ask her for her advice on what backing should be used. Since she's your 'go to' person it wouldn't be strange for you to ask her...and that way you'll find out which backing she likes best.
