I just finished this quilt....now I need some ideas from the pros as to what type of stencil you would suggest. I'm not that great a free motion yet...just a newbie to the long arm...I do have a few templates...any ideas???

rushdoggie 06-30-2011 08:38 PM

do you have a kind of flower shape? Its sure pretty...

JillC 06-30-2011 08:41 PM

not really....I have a few panto's....nothing flowery....
I need something rather simple..I can stitch in the ditch part of it....don't know a simple free motion flower design..
any names of patterns or sources to purchase them would be appreciated. You can look all day, but they are not seperated by skill level on the sites I have looked at.

If you're new to FMQ, I'd try doing loop de loops. Just a circle one way, then a circle another way. You can do them side to side in lines or in patches. You could do the middle as a large patch of loops and then do a row of them in the borders. Once you get the hang of loops, it is not a big stretch to start making a second row around each loop that has bumps on it - presto - flowers.
I'm sure if you practise a couple, even just on a sheet of paper, you'd have the hang of it quickly. Just have faith in yourself and don't give up!

What a beautiful quilt!! I am not very experienced at quilting, but why not trace the pattern of the flowers.

JillC 06-30-2011 08:50 PM

great ideas....I'll get out the pad and paper and see what I can come up with....I know I don't want anything too tiny or detailed since the quilt is kind of busy...Maybe if I trace the big flowers I will get the hang of it and then can free motion them elsewhere on the quilt, and do the loopy's on the boarder? I'm also not very good at "looking ahead" yet, so I get lost in where I am going sometimes. :-D
Thanks ... keep the ideas coming...you are always so very helpful

Can you use a leaf pattern to mimic the autumn leaves?

A really fun thing to do is hit the dollar stores and get some fun shapes, such as leaves. You can find this in the party isles used for window clings, table decorations, etc. Lay these on your quilt (maybe a touch of glue stick or sticky dot), and do some loops or meander up to the shape. Trace around the shape with your machine.

thanx everyone. I think I'll try duplicating the sunflowers and leaves as well.

Hope everyone had a teriffic 4th of July

Another idea is to do a search on children's coloring pages -- they are simple and you can print them off and make a template.
