thank you everyone for the great suggestions i never thought to start with the floral and work from there.thank you jan for the great advice on colors

I have this pattern, it's from Quilter's World. You noticed that the colors used were picked from the floral border.
|
Bree 123, that is a great idea. And Jan, yours as well; you always have interesting tips.
I agree with other suggestions: what is your current color scheme? Find a border print you like and pull colors from that. I do this with my quilts ... find my inspiration fabric and go from there. |
Wow, Jan, such good, practical advice! You must be a wonderful teacher
Wow, Jan, you give such good advice! You must be a WONDERFUL teacher! ! |
Which issue of quilters world is this pattern in??? Love the pattern and would like to make it too.....good luck with your project...

You don't even have to buy the 'large floral' print. Just use it to see the color combos. If it is very pleasing to your eye, then those colors are probably going to go together (there can be the odd weird fabric). Take an afternoon and go audition fabric at the store. You will find that the more you do it, the easier it will become. If you have a smaller quilt shop in your area, the folks there should be able to help you.

Once you pick your focus fabric, check out the dots of colors on the selvedge edge - they give you great ideas for colors that will work great with the focus fabric...and the 5th dot is perfect for the pop in the quilt!

Mandyrose,
I have similar issues. I think the advice to find your focus fabric first is great advice. Then, if you need help finding fabrics that work with it, ask for help or look at other fabrics in the fabric line. Don't be afraid to ask for help choosing fabrics. You are not the only one who finds choosing fabrics difficult. |
