Need tips for working with LAME
 

I am making a Christmas wall hanging and want to use gold lame for one of the borders. anybody have any tips for me. Can it be pressed? Would appreciate any and all advice I can get.

For most lames, you need to pin a lot, because it is slippery. And you should not press, because it will melt. Ask me how I know.

There are some low heat stablizers that work with silk. Misty Fuse comes to mind. You might try using one of those. Use a press cloth!! Try it on a scrap. Hmmm they also make sticky stablizers for embroidery that don't require heat... might try one of those.

When I work with lame , I always use a fusible interfacing ( like you use on collars and cuffs) to stabilize it. I do press the fusible interfacing to it... lame on the bottom , fusible interfacing upper layer. Most fusible interfacing is poly , so it too has a low melting point. Do experiment with a couple of small layers of both to get the exact temp on your iron. Each iron is just a bit different .

Thank you. I am using a fusible interfacing, but it's not sticking very well. I may not have the iron hot enough--will continue experimenting.

I used a cotton bronze lame from JoAnn's on one quilt as a skinny inner border. I did not quilt through it though. sewed fine.

If the item you are making will not be handled a lot, you could use either glue stick or basting spray to adhere the lame to
a more stable fabric . Another trick is to utilize topstitching to hold edges firm in place of pressing with a hot iron.

First off love your avitar. I'm a former Pittsburgher so i make lots of Steeler stuff. I use lame a lot. It holdas up with repeated washings..I also quilt on it but not heavy. I got very frustrated trying different fusables. To prevent fraying I cut size slightly larger then needed and immediately zigzag edges. I use used fabric softner sheets to stabilize. I do not hav a fancy new machine, mine is 36 yrs old Singer. Good luck. Let me know what works for you
