My 84-year-old father is quite ill. He's a graduate of the US Military Academy at West Point (class of 1948), something in which he takes great pride and delight, especially in his old age.

I found some USMA fabric at Hancock - bought 2 yards - and would like to make him a lap (or twin?) size quilt. But as a newby quilter, I really don't have a clue as to how best to do this. Please make suggestions!!!

Two photos of the fabric are attached. The colored areas measure 2 3/4" x 2 3/4". While the colors of the USMA are gold and black, the "gold" in this fabric is more of a muddy "camel" - not something one would want to bring out (and almost impossible to match, anyway).

I so look forward to your ideas for a not-too-time-consuming ('cuz Dad is 84 and failing) quilt pattern. THANK YOU for helping me!!!

Since time is of the essence, and he is so proud of his accomplishment, I would use your fabric as a center panel and put a couple of borders around it in coordinating colors.

Quick and easy and you don't have to worry about any mis-cuts.

BTW I love the fabric. I have never seen that one before.

I would agree use it as a middle panel and build the border. It will be perfect! Maybe put corner stones of a flag in each corner?

Maybe trim off a couple of rows of this, use the rest as a center panel, and the squares from the cut off rows as cornerstones? Then you would not have to worry about matching up the gold.

I would trim to size. add a couple borders in colors that match and quilt down the white lines between the squares. I don't believe a quilt for a nursing home need be fancy. the thought and warmth and comfort is what is important. Your borders will add to the personalization of the quilt. Hate to say it but theft is a possibility in the nursing home so I would not put too much work into it.
