Need Your Input - Border or No Border

1 Attachment(s)
I finished the blocks today. This is for my sister who just loves purple. (and I do mean love) I do not have a lot of purple so there are some plums and nearly pinks. I am leaning toward putting a border of about 3 inches. Please overlook the striped sheet that they are pinned on.

What do you think? Yes. No. Less than 3 inches. More than 3 inches.

helou 05-03-2017 02:36 PM

very nice. I like these colors! Do you still have enough pink to put a narrow border to frame it and then one of the darker color for a larger border of may be 3 inches...
Once you sow the blocks together, you can try to place some fabrics and audition what it would look like

QuiltnNan 05-03-2017 02:43 PM

i would make the border a different size than the stripes of the blocks... i.e. if the stripes are 1.5" finished each, then 3" border would look good

Tartan 05-03-2017 02:53 PM

A 3 inch border would be a nice finish to your pretty blocks!

sewingitalltogether 05-03-2017 02:54 PM

I like it the way it is.

patsan 05-03-2017 02:57 PM

I would put a border on it.

MarionsQuilts 05-03-2017 03:02 PM

I like it just like that! Not all quilts need a border, and to me, this is one of them!

ckcowl 05-03-2017 03:12 PM

I would add a border to frame the quilt. It is sure to be a happy surprise for your purple loving sister. :)

sewbizgirl 05-03-2017 03:13 PM

No border. Why stop the movement? I think borders are boring... unless you have to make a quilt bigger and can't think of a better way.

(Yes, I'm terribly opinionated on borders. :D )

AVFD215 05-03-2017 03:15 PM

Very nice. I would put a border on it if I needed to make it to a specific size.
Or I might just put a binding on it with one of the purples in the quilt.
It will look Great either way.

nativetexan 05-03-2017 03:23 PM

I too vote for a border.

MadQuilter 05-03-2017 03:38 PM

It doesn't "need" a border but a border wouldn't hurt. However, I think a narrow border would be too wimpy.

Jingle 05-03-2017 05:20 PM

Beautiful quilt and colors. I would put a white border on it.

nwm50 05-04-2017 02:29 AM

Border! So as to not shorten the look when binding it. Either 3" or 2 1/2" of med purple should work... u have enough dark already, I think

LindaJ 05-04-2017 03:34 AM

I am not an expert but would add a border with the same colors.

ArtsyOne 05-04-2017 03:36 AM

Lovely purples! I vote for a narrow stop border and then a 3" outer border following by a dark binding.

red-warrior 05-04-2017 03:54 AM

I would like a border...and I like helou's idea for a small pink and a larger darker border.

ube quilting 05-04-2017 04:11 AM

What a pretty creation. the colors you paired with the purple work great and you accomplished making a purple quilt with style. I agree with MadQuilter on the border.

If you have to make it bigger for size, I would add another row of blocks if you have enough fabric rather than a small border.

If you want to add a border for the effect, make it a wider than average one to give it some omph. Figure out how much fabric you have to work with and make the border as wide as it allows.

peace

Judith1005 05-04-2017 04:47 AM

I'm not normally a border person. But, this time, I vote YES for a border. I think the size you suggested in the darkest purple would finish it off nicely. Then a small print or stripe for the binding. (If you have any.)

linmid 05-04-2017 04:59 AM

I agree with helou the narrow pink border would really et it off.

carolynjo 05-04-2017 05:35 AM

If you decide to use a border, I would use the darkest purple. . She is going to love it.

cashs_mom 05-04-2017 06:07 AM

I think it's your choice. Personally, I'd probably leave it the way it is. Just bind it and gift. Whatever you decide, I'm sure your purple loving sis will love it.

klswift 05-04-2017 07:20 AM

I would border it. I would audition one side with just a dark purple border (the same size as your strips) and the other side with a border of the lighter pink/purple and then the dark color. The colors blend very nicely and I'm sure she will be pleased with the balance the pinkish and bluish ones give it, but if she is a purple person, then it should have a dark purple border.

bearisgray 05-04-2017 07:23 AM

I think it looks okay the way it is.

Wanabee Quiltin 05-04-2017 07:56 AM

A border is like a picture frame. So yes, I think a border of maybe 4-5 inches would be nice.

Garden Gnome 05-04-2017 09:23 AM

I often don't use a border, but I think one would add to the beauty of this quilt. I like the idea of a narrow pink one, then a wider purple one. Great looking quilt you made!

Jordan 05-04-2017 12:49 PM

I think it would look nice with a small framing border and then add a darker wider (3" would be a great size) border. Maybe if you audition a couple of different ways something just will click visually for you. Good luck and lucky sister.

I agree! As I always ask "what size do I want this guilt to be?" That will help determine my borders.

cathyvv 05-04-2017 01:47 PM

Yes, 2 borders, 1 dark, 1 light. Dark to frame, light to make it bigger. Unless you don't want it bigger.:D

coffeegirl 05-05-2017 03:33 AM

Without any border, that is going to be one narrow quilt! consider making more blocks, then I would put a narrow border, 1" or so, followed by a wider border about 5-6 inches. Have a beautiful design quilted in the border and it won't be "boring."

momsbusy 05-05-2017 04:50 AM

I like the way that a border would frame your quilt.

callen 05-05-2017 04:53 AM

I think it definitely needs a border & as some others have said, a narrow one to frame the quilt & then a wider border to finish it off. IMHO, only.

sprice 05-05-2017 05:02 AM

I like it without a border.

JanieH 05-05-2017 06:06 AM

I would add a border(s). I like borders; I think they finish the quilt.

sewnclog 05-05-2017 11:23 AM

Yes I would put a border on it.

Ellen 1 05-05-2017 05:02 PM

This block does not need a border. I say no borders. :-)

costumegirl 05-05-2017 05:12 PM

I agree with other comments that a narrow one in the pink or light purple colours and then a wide dark would frame it nicely.

Very pretty!!

Painiacs 05-05-2017 09:58 PM

I think a skinny border than bigger one would be great let us see whatever you decide!
