years ago before the computer age there was a pattern for a 3d Christmas tree. the best I can describe it is it looked sort of like the trees that were made with a magazine where you folded the pages and it became a tree and then you painted it. This was fabric and somehow it was quilted and each section sewed together to form a standing tree. I am probably not describing it correctly. I googled quilted christmas tree and what I want is not coming up. if anyone has a pattern or knows what I am talking about to even give me a name of it so I could google it I would be most thankful.

I know what you are talking about. I have one burried in the garage somewhere. I didn't make it though, it was given to me.

Was it like this? I can't find a pattern for this one either, but maybe one of our talented quilters can help.

oh long ago my girlfriend gave me one and i made one myself after that. out of fabric. about as tall as my lower arm to my fingers. I thought i had a pic in my photobucket albums but evidently not.
seems like i drew myself a pattern for one section which is made over and over. my brain is fuzzy on how to put them together. individually if i remember right. perhaps someone will know or find a photo. good luck. i bring mine to the office with a bead garland draped over it. the ends of the branches have a ribbon bow sewn to them also. Ah, there you go. someone put a pic in. just found this online- - "I found the stuffed tree pattern! While pattern shopping yesterday, I remembered that someone on this forum was looking for the stuffed Christmas Tree pattern. I found it in the holiday McCalls pattern book: M5778. I have a really old version of this and still like to make them now and then. Not sure where you're located, but McCall's patterns are 99 cents this week." also this "McCALL'S CRAFTS (CHRISTMAS TREE CENTERPIECE) and you stuff it. I think the pattern # was 7772 but, I am not sure." |
That is so cute Chele. I want one. Hope we can find a pattern.
|
I knew I wouldn't be let down. :D :D :D I found the pattern it was McCalls 7772 and bought it. I thik that tree is perfect for a few gifts I have to make. Thanks for the help!!!!!!!!!!! YAHOOOOOOOOOOO I am a happy camper today.
|
Glad you found the pattern.
Chele, that's what mine looks like (except of course, different fabrics) |
A friend gave me a box of fabrics a few years ago, including that panel.
This year I made individual pillows out of the panel by backing the tree with batting and then putting green fleece on the back and stuffing the tree. It is perfect for embellishing with all of the little ornaments that they make for those little artificial trees, or just by doing beading on the trees. I'm having a ball with the beading. |
P.S. If you don't pad them too much, they look great hanging on an
apartment door as an alternative to a wreath. |
|
Bellaboo, thank you for posting that site on the readers digest tree I have been looking for it forever.
|
I think McCall's still sells this pattern, but the samples are in blue and white. Sorry, but not real sure.
|
Thank you for asking about this pattern!!! I had forgotten all about these trees :D :D :D
|
I used to make those for gifts way back when, wonder where mine got to?
May in Jersey |
Glad you found the pattern. I remember making one of those way back when my daughter was in the navy. She still has it.
|
Will you post pics after you make them?

It seems odd to see your title: needed OLD from the 70's christmas tree pattern
To me - OLD is before 1900 |

this project looks like it might be what you are looking for. i really was looking for a tree that was sewn all in one piece but this one might be easier to assemble. |
I love those trees. There was a lady at the craft fair selling them....$20 Meant to buy one, but didn't get to it. I'm hoping she's at the one at the mall this weekend. Will definitely buy one. She has some really pretty fabric. She also has stuffed geckos too! lol

Make your own pattern. Draw 1/2 of a christmas tree- whatever size you want. Use the edge line and put it on a fold-- cut 2. Sew them together wrong sides and leave the bottom open. Make at least 2 of these-- if the tree is large you can make 3. Turn them right sides out and press. Layer them all together and sew a seam down the middle so you have "leaflets" . Stuff them individually, sew up the bottom and sew ribbons or ornaments on the "branches. I did that year s ago-- very quick and easy. You can use just one fabric or several. Have fun.

chele, are you sure that's what that is? looks like something with wings to me   |
In the newest Nancy Halvorsen pattern book there is a pattern for a small tree like you are describing (I think). The book is called Sew Necessary. Lots of other cute things as well.
|
Wow! I saw that tree and it brought back memories of my Grandmother. She made me one of those trees when I first got married and I still have it! That was 40 years ago. I drag it out every year and it still looks beautiful. I am glade that others out there enjoy that tree as much as I do!

The tree is very simply to make. I can not find the pattern but here goes. Make a tree pattern the size of the tree you want plus 1/2 inch. Start by drawing a triangle for the pattern. Then trace on to your fabric. You will need to cut 4 trees. With right sides together sew a front and a back together two times. Clip and turn right side out. Put the two trees on top of each other and sew a straight line from the top of the tree (where the star would be) to the base of the tree. Stuff each section and the sew the bottom close. Make sure the tree will set flat on the table before sewing close. You can now add any special decorations you would like. Merry Christmas

Oh dear!! I had forgotten about making several of those for Christmas gifts back in the 70's. Then, in the 80's a friend's mother died leaving her with a little 'start' of a Flying Geese top. I made her a tree out of the piece. I'll have to look for the pattern when I get home. You have given me a great idea. Hope you enjoy the pattern!
