needle size for...
machine quilting. What size is the best for quilting, not piecing. And when using the glue basting method, what size?
Thanks, Jenna |
I like a 90/14 top stitch needle. Preferable platinum for quilting.
I usually piece with an 80/12 platinum. |
Longarm or DSM? For longarm, I use 16 or 18.
|
I always choose my needle to compliment the thread that I am using.
There is a thread/needle reference guide on this page http://www.superiorthreads.com/reference-guides/ |
For my piecing, I prefer a 12, and I usually change to a 14 for FMQ.
|
I choose the needle to fit the thread. I use a topstitch needle usually size 80 for domestic machine because I use thin thread when machine quilting.
|
The size and type of needle is dependent on the weight/ type of thread being used. Visit Superior Threads, you can print off free charts that tell you what needle to use for which weight/ type of threads to avoid breakage and fraying.

Thanks for the link. The question was for a domestic machine. I often use Coats and Clark thread because it is convenient but I don't know how to tell the weight on it, any suggestion?
Thanks |
I believe C&C is a #40 thread, so a 90/14 needle would be right.
I generally use a 90/14 (topstitch) in my DSM for almost any thread and it does just fine. I used to switch to a smaller needle for the thinner threads but accidentally forgot a time or two, and noticed no difference. I do still switch to a larger eyed needle (100/16), when using heavier threads. Just want to mention that I do still use a finer needle when doing general sewing, if I'm sewing on lighter weight fabric (so the holes will be smaller). |
