When I do applique I use needle turn but I must admit my eyes are having more trouble seeing the fabric these days and will probably have to stop someday.

I think in general, most people either don't have or don't want to spend the time it takes to do it the old fashioned way. Corners and indentations are much harder to do neatly and at least for me, everything can feel fumbly at first when I'm trying to keep the applique piece stead while I stitch. If it were a wall hanging, I'd machine applique too.

I read some where that if you use the spray adhisive it helps keep the applique piece in place. I think it called 505

My DD and I both do only needle turn. I like it because you can take it with you with out bring a ton of stuff. The block, small pair of scissors, thread and a needle. We have never tried machine applique, maybe soon.

I have bought those clip on for over my glasses. They really help. I bought them from Keepsake.

Kay Mackenzie has many books on needle turn applique. She uses a back basting technique and include a disk with some of her books that lets you print the patterns out in several sizes.

I too love needle turn applique and am in the process of learning right now. I just ordered a book with many techniques etc...I am determined to learn the technique as I have many friends who do needle turn applique and it's beautiful. :)

I much prefer to see and do needle turn appliqué......so no, I hope it hasn't died..............machine appliqué is fine for some....but I love the look of hand work..............and that includes the machine quilting to hand quitling..........altho I must confess I have had some of my quilts done by a machine quilter, mostly due to time.
