Needle-turn thread question
I'm about to buy thread to applique. I have no project in particular in mind. I'm wondering what are the most used colors are being used by you applique-ers out there. I'm thinking green would be pretty common but wondering what some of the others you most often use???

When I did it years ago, I found a very fine silk thread, it was off-white. My back ground was white and I didn't want to keep changing threads, it worked well since I was able to hide my stitches.

I too love silk for applique. The beauty of silk is it sinks down into the fabric so you don't have to match exactly. I have found this set plus a very dark gray covers 90% of my needs for colors.

Superior Threads sells a selection of bobbins in their bobbin donuts that you might like. They have brights Or pastels and the donut makes a nice case to contain them.

I agree with the others. If you're not going to match exactly to your applique fabric, I would go with a 100wt silk & buy white, charcoal grey & cream. Those 3 colors would blend in the best.
Depending on what colors you prefer, Aurifil (my personal favorite since I like 100% cotton quilts) does sell thread kits with coordinating colors. As far as what is the "most common", it depends on what you like to quilt. Baby quilts might use a lot of white/pink/blue/green/grey. Kids' quilts might use more primary colors. If you like doing Baltimore album quilts, those are often darker tones. One tip I would share with you if you're going with cotton is to buy the small 200m spools of Aurifil. Hawthorne Threads has the entire Aurifil collection available on their site & I'm always happy with how quickly they arrive. http://www.hawthornethreads.com/threads/aurifil |

I use Mettler silk finish thread since I have it already for use on my Bernina. Others I have noticed use the silk thread.

I do a good amount of hand applique and try to use the Mettler. I have many shades of green. Try to match the color to the fabrics.

I have enjoyed using "Invisafil" by WonderFil. It's 100 wt and like sewing with a hair! I use a "neutral" color as its very had to see when used.

With applique it's important to me to match the color for each applique piece. I use 50 weight poly for mine. If I had to use only use a few, I'd go with white, cream, grey, taupe, and black. Those play well with most fabrics.

I use YLI silk in the basic tan (brown) family and 235 is my favorite.
