Needlebooks / needle cases
 

I have never made or had use for a needle case. I saw the recent needle book swap.
What do you like/require/want in a needlebook? I may try and make one/some for
gifts. I need some hints and suggestions for how to start and what to make them out of.

The needle book I made for myself has several pages-----------to sort needles to some extent.

I like them made so my needles, thimble, and thread don't fall out. This has happened to me with previous gifts and it wasn't fun.

Now I use a zippered alligator container a friend gave me. Yes, it is bulkier, but I can instantly find my hand working supplies when needed. It sits proudly on my large bookshelf and looks decorative.

I've seen needle/pin holders from very simple - almost like a matchbook with batting to hold the pins/needles -
to fairly elaborate sewing kits.

If I was going to go for a sewing kit, I would also like to be able to close it so nothing can fall out of it.

i have a couple i use every day- couldn't live with out them...they are made from felted wools, one is a little book style with 6 pages-looks like a little notebook- a cover and a velcro tab closure...it fits perfectly in a hinged tin i use- along with my stork embroidery scissors & needle threaders.
the other one is more a wallet style with a pocket for a spool of thread, felt (tabs) to hold needles- threader's, pockets for scissors, ect- it folds like a tri-fold wallet. there are many many different types, styles of needle keepers- people who do hand work love them-use them all the time.

I have several needle books of all sizes and kinds...(I guess I'm not picky) I've received several from friends. (They're like pincushions---a small one to go one place and a large one for another.. I like a needlebook small enough to put in a bag with a small project when I'm on the road, but I also have one great larger one that is almost the size of a paperback. It has several felt pages, plus four or five pockets for scissors, threads etc. It is my favorite for crazy quilting and embroidery projects There are so many to choose from. You can get a lot of good ideas by googling images of needlebooks or needle cases. I wish I could post a picture. Out of my grandmother's things, there is a wool butterfly-shaped needle-holder, several butterflies all with buttonhole stitched edges, each butterfly slightly smaller than the other so when the "wings"outside are folded everything is tucked neatly away.

My thoughts exactly. I would love to see the cases all of you have mentioned. A pocket to hold items sounds smart.
and pages for needles. What else? Do scissors go in a holder or a pocket? Is thread added or not? I want to make
several. If I take the time to make these, I want them to be useful. Not just thrown on a shelf, or tossed to be recycled. Guess I need to just bite the bullet and go for it. But please keep the ideas coming. What is your favorite fabric choice?

I made a quilted one for my partner in the first needlebook swap. It was fun. I quilted the cover, and knitted wool to felt for the pages. I included straight pins, a small pair of scissors in a little pocket on the back inside cover page and a package of sewing needles. I also knitted some wool to make a simpler one for me. It's just felted wool insided and out with lots of room for my needle collection. I don't keep them orgainzed because I don't hand sew that much and when I do I just grab the first needle I find.
