needles is it just me?
is it me or do your needles bend when you sew on the binding on the back/front. i just finished one and i ended with a very curved little needle.was just wondering if this has happened to others.

Yes, it has happened to me...have even broke needles while hand stitching...I don't think brand of needles makes a different, I have broke many different brands, including John James.
It has happened to me occasionally with smaller/thinner needles. I like a thin needle because it goes through the fabric easier and is easier to pull through several layers of fabric.
Yes this happens to me! I use small thin needles!
I like John James straw needles for appliqué, but I found that Roxanne straw needles seem to be sturdier and thicker, so that's what I use when i start getting curves.
How many layers are you trying to sew through? |
can't say as i've ever bent them. but i don't do that much applique and have started doing my bindings by machine.
I have found that I have gradually bent a lot of different needles, not so much with the John James and I have used the one in particular a whole lot. Here I thought I was stronger than I thought to bend the needle, must be lots of strong ladies around, that is great. :)

I tried Klasse' (1st time) needles on the quilt that I finished yesterday and not only did they bend they also broke (3 of them to be exact). I have never had this problem with other brands.
i am usually sewing two layers. sometimes get the batting also but trynot to. glad its not just me.
I sew with No. 12 quilting needles and yes they bend. I have bent several. Stuck them in my fingers too. Ouch!
I quilt with Roxanne needles - usually #11's but sometimes #12's. Don't have issues with the 11's bending but sometimes the 12's. But not usually when sewing on the binding.
I have snapped needles in half when hand quilting, and bent them also. It seems to happen with one package, then the next package, no snapped needles.
I have bent and broken needles while quilting but not while sewing on binding.
I like long skinny needles and most of them bend. A thicker or a short needle just doesn't feel right.
They always bend for me...gosh, thought I was like that magician guy that bends metal..now I'm just another quilter!!:(
I had never thought about it. I just expected the needle to bend after using it for a while because it always had. I just make sure I have a supply on hand. I have not paid attention to the brand so i cannot speak to that.

never had that happen...I use schmetz size 70 or 80...
