Never done this before, help is needed, lots of help
 

I want to transfer a picture onto material to put in a quilt. What are the steps to accomplish such a project.

You can buy fabric sheets or what I do is cut freezer paper and fabric to fit my printer, iron the fabric on the shiny side of paper and put it through your printer. Be sure the fabric is stuck well on all sides so that it will not get caught in the printer.

You can do this by ironing some white/muslin fabric on t freezer paper then cut to size of printer paper. Then use this in your printer to print directly on to fabric. Or you can go to fabric store-Joannes, Hancocks or LQS and get some ready to print sheets. Either way you just load the fabric paper into printer like regular paper and print away. Pay attention to which side it prints on so you have fabric facing right way. :-) ask how I know this part haha. My printer is a bit fussy and only likes it when one piece of fabric paper is in tray at a time. After you are done printing carefully and slowly peel the fabric off the paper or you can distort your picture if you pull to fast or from only on area --fabric moves.

if you use your own fabric, you also have to treat it. if you buy the sheets, they are already treated. i bought mine at walmart. follow the directions carefully. i believe you have to heat set it after printing. good luck

All these are great suggestions, but remember that these all work with Ink Jet printers, not Laser printers!

I made a 4th of July wall hanging with pictures I found off the net. I treated my fabric the way lilybeck mentioned and it turned out perfectly. Now I have to mention I've not washed this as of yet and it's been like 3 years ago, just wipped clean with a soft damp cloth and still going good and pretty! Hope this helps!

Thank You, thank You, all for your suggestions. I will be going to Joann's this week-end to get some of the paper. That sounds like what I should use. And Momma_K what are you doing with that snow on your avatar. And in the foothills no less. My daughter lives in Tennessee and she does not have any snow. I think you took our snow from Michigan, and you know what, you can have it.

You must either pre-treat your fabric with Bubblejet set (or a similar product) or purchase pre-prepared fabric sheets. Otherwise the pictures will wash out. Some products require heat setting and others don't.

It is funny I actually did this yesterday. I took a full sheet of photo paper 8 1/2 x 11 and taped the white material to the top of the photo paper. I put it into the paper tray and then sent the picture to the printer. It printed a great picture of my son and his daughter at their Father Daughter dance which she wants to put on the quilt I am helping her make out of her dance T-Shirts. Worked like a charm. Make sure that the material you use isn't flimsy as that will catch. I only taped on the top of the sheet and it worked fine. trip the white material to match the size of the paper also or it will catch on the sides. Good luck!
