Oops think I hit send twice this time. Sorry guys told you my brain wasn't working today.

Sharonsews 05-03-2011 07:02 AM

GO to your library and ask if you can use their tables in the meeting room for a few hours. Bet they will say yes! :) Good luck! When I have to do work on the floor, I take the remote control to TV, cell phone, remote phone and a drink to the floor with me. I ignore the door if someone is there, they will call if they really want me to open the door! ;)

vtretire 05-03-2011 07:03 AM

Yes, and I love it. Oops, sorry. This is a reply to quiltmom04

This is Sharon Schamber's method of basting a quilt, using boards - no more ruined knees! This is a 2-part video, be sure to see the next one too!

I remember being so excited when I saw that. I went out and bought 2 boards. Then I realized I have no table big enough that the boards and quilt don't hang off the sides. :(

I just watched this. What a fantastic idea. Since I try to do small ones, this is perfect. Thanks so much for that link!

Oh I LOVE this method! Works great and you can sit right at your table! :D

mpeters1200 05-03-2011 07:44 AM

I'm 31 years old and I feel your pain. I blew out my knee in an accident when I was 25. I've had RA in both my knees almost 7 years. My hips and ankles are bad too. I hate getting down on the floor. I completed understand what you are going through. I'm curious about that new method too.

Whenever I have to baste something, I employ my hubby and kids when I can. Otherwise, I take everything to my club meeting at a church and use the tables there.

Homemother 05-03-2011 08:06 AM

YUP! Knee killer. My knees still hurt from when I basted a quilt in January. We had a large dinner where we put two large tables together in our dining room. It took me weeks to realize I could spread the quilt out over that and finish the basting! Since then I have purchased some 505 Basting Spray and used that for one project with excellent results.

Keep going girlfriend!

mjsylvstr 05-03-2011 09:07 AM

Is there a school or church that have tables that you could use for pinning?

or even a library.some have large table that they have for meeting and such and perhaps they would let you use them.

Lavada 05-03-2011 09:41 AM

sorry for your pain hope things work out for you keep quilting and good luck

Kappy 05-03-2011 11:24 AM

Do you have a wall big enough to hang it on? There are some tutorials on this site on how to spray baste. Might be the answer for you.

margecam52 05-03-2011 11:30 AM

That arthritis may be a need to adjust the premerian/estrogen they have you on..or maybe you need to be on one.

I had a hysterectomy at 43, have not regretted it. I was put on premerians (the smallest dose)..ugh...awful aches, pains, mood swings...gave them to my sister...no problems after that!

If you are on one that is not maroon in color...ask for the maroon.

Do try the Sharon Schamber method (someone put a link in their reply to you). It works great!
Marge

LilQuilt 05-03-2011 11:40 AM

Sad to hear you are so young and having so many problems. Take your time, listen to these gals on hints who have been there and done that. The card table solution sounds good to me.

RobertaMarie 05-03-2011 02:03 PM

Sending prayers and sympathy.... I know what you mean, but I am fifty years older than you are. Take care, my dear. And do try the Sharon Schamber method... I know I am going to my next quilt. Blessings....

trolleystation 05-03-2011 02:59 PM

You may be arthritic but it sounds like your home is very clean. I could NEVER spread a quilt on my kitchen floor. I have however used the living room floor. Getting up and down is not easy for me either as I have had partial ankle fusion of both ankles in the last three years. My heart goes out to you. Hang in there. You do sound like you are making the best of your situation. God Bless You.

jojosnana 05-03-2011 03:04 PM

OMG! You must find an easier way.......

vivoaks 05-03-2011 03:36 PM

So sorry to hear about all your issues! I guess I have nothing to complain about at my age! Hang in there...just do what you can, and let the rest go.

KLO 05-03-2011 03:43 PM

You are waaaaaaay too young to be going through all of this. It's bad enough we all have to end up that way when we are old enough!!! Hope you find a "cure" for all those problems.

ufoqueen 05-03-2011 04:07 PM

What about the sheet on the wall and using spray basting? Also some quilt or fabric stores allow good customers to use their tables during slow times. I feel your pain, both bladder and arthritis, but we cannot allow ourselves to give up quilting because of these problems. Hope we get to see the finished quilt.

Ps 150 05-03-2011 04:34 PM

Thanks! I don't like using spray baste on large projects as it doesn't stick for too long. Our local library doesn't have large tables to use, I can't use the ones at the school and I just switched churches so I'm not too comfortable with asking to use the new church's tables. I normally don't have a problem with pinning on the floor but the continuous up and down motion from a weak bladder did me in yesterday. I'm still aching like I did a full workout. Needless to say, I skipped my normal morning workout this morning.

Dee 05-03-2011 04:47 PM

Sorry for all your health issues. The bladder issue is no fun.

clhornak 05-03-2011 04:52 PM

So sorry you feel so bad. But at least you can still get up. If I got down, it would take a crane to get me back up and in the meantime, I would pee myself! LOL

mjsylvstr 05-03-2011 05:21 PM

I fell a couple weeks ago and couldn't get up and IT HURT !!!!!!

I wouldn't let hubby help, told him just leave me and I will manage......

we both got laughing like hyenas as I scooted across the room on my derriere to get on the rug and near to a chair to boost myself up. These old knees need all the help they can get.

It sure was a sight to behold !!!!!!!!!

Love this method but you need to have use of a table large enough to handle your larger quilts. My boards are large enough for a queen size and I can handle them myself. I did glue flannel around my board so that it would grab on to and hold the fabric as I rolled it. I can sit down to baste which helps believe me. I thread baste using the tailor-tack method (as she shows in her video.) Also starch my front and back 2-3 times before sandwiching. So far, using her method, my quilts have come out without wrinkles or distortions on the front or the back. There is another video out there where the gal spray bastes even her very large quilts by fastening her quilt backing on the wall (covered to prevent the 505 from going onto walls or woodwork, etc.). She really advocates this method and says that she has not had any problems when quilting. Good luck

I just hate not being able to squat down, stay as long as I want, and then stand up and walk off.. I was always so strong I just didn't think this would happen to me.. and tell me.. when did my arms turn to crepe?? one day they were smooth, supple, and strong.. then one day I woke up and they are crepey, blotchy, and not so strong as they used to be...

Thank you God I can still hold and carry my grandchildren.

to PS 150,
Have you tried Glucosamine Sulfate with Chondroitin for the arthritis pain and tender joints that you are experiencing? I have a squeaky knee and tender fingers at times (and I am not 28 either)and I swear by the Glusosamine Sulfate with Chondroitin. It helps joint comfort and stability. It takes a few weeks before you notice an improvement but it does work!!! Been using it for years and FINALLY my orthopedic doc recommends it. Not sure if I am allowed to recommend this on this board. I am a nurse just thinking about your problem. pm me.

Pieceful Quilter 05-03-2011 09:27 PM

You have my sincere sympathy. I was about your age when my back "went out" for the first time. Oh, the pain! Please take good care of yourself. You are WAY too young to have to worry about arthritis.

gramajo 05-03-2011 09:50 PM

I have rheumatoid arthritis, a very bad back, bad knees and a very weak bladder so I can certainly sympathize with your problems. I'm very lucky--I have a quilting daughter who layers all my quilts for me.

I took this for quite some time and it didn't help at all and I finally got a new knee......my surgeon told me not to bother with it as he didn't recommend it.

I guess the saying is true......can't please all of the people all of the time. We take what helps!!!!!!

redmadder 05-04-2011 03:38 AM

I just love this board. Where else could we admit to these problems? If I get down on the floor, I scoot around on my backside. Knees cannot handle it. Bladder, etc., but thank goodness my brain works and I still can make beautiful quilts.

justlooking 05-04-2011 04:16 AM

I would look for a church where you could layer your quilt on table. Doing it on the floor is hard for everyone.

gale 05-05-2011 12:23 AM

I used to take something that helped my knees so much. It had glucosamine but also something they called lubravite, which was white willow bark extract and ginger root extract. But unfortunately the company quit making it (changed their formulation) and the new stuff doesn't really work for me.

Lv2sew2011 05-05-2011 12:28 AM

I can't get down on the floor either, lower back pain, hard to get back up! I tried the wall and it works pretty good, and I've even used my bed with hubby help! I hope you are able to find a way to get ur done!

justlooking 05-05-2011 02:22 AM

Hope you feel better soon.

sailsablazin 05-05-2011 05:38 AM

We sound like a bunch of "old" ladies whose bodies are falling apart. My body may be taking a downslide, but my mind is still 28 years old and I am appreciating life. I tell my kids that I am still 37 years old (especially my 30 year old son).lol
I used the Sharon Shamber method of basting a quilt yeserday with the help of a friend. I did need the extra set of hands since I didn't know what I was doing, but it really seemed to work well.

sailsablazin 05-05-2011 05:42 AM

I watched a second tutorial (I think it was you-tube)with Sharon Shambers regarding basting a quilt if you are going to HAND QUILT. The procedure was slightly different, but for the love of me I can't find it now. Anyone know where this one is???

sailsablazin 05-05-2011 06:02 AM

Hey Gale from North-Central Indiana,
Now that it is warm enough, you could always use a clean picnic table...go to your nearest park with a few clean sheets....you can "get her done."
