Well, I've been wanting to try applique for awhile now, but have been intimidated by it. I purchased the book "Year In The Life of Sun Bonnett Sue" I decided to try the Halloween one, and have almost got everything appliqued on it. It has been soooo much fun. The only problem, I am using Wonder Under, and some of them don't seem to be sticking very well. Was wondering if any of you have ever used basting spray to secure them until you stitch around them. Thanks for you help.

i washable glue stick works well to hold pieces- and washes out- i don't know if basting spray would hold them or not- if you have some on hand you could give it a try-
i pick up glue sticks at the dollar store in 4-packs- very inexpensive- and can use them for so many projects- and the glue washes away- so they are handy. wonderunder is one of the fusables that you really have to follow the instructions for usage for it to hold- if the iron temp isn't right- or you don't hold it for the right amount of time...kind of (picky) stuff. are you hand appliqueing ? or machine? if machine- small pins will take care of small areas that have just come loose-just make sure to remove them before running over them |
Yeah all that Wonder under is different. Some say use steam others say no steam. I've never really had a problem with it but have used the glue stick before as ck mentioned. I did try the spray once. I don't recommend it.
Glad your doing applique. Thats my favorite. You can do so much. What stitch are using to applique? When I first learned to do it someone showed me the buttonhole stitch way so thats the way I do about eveything. Sometimes I switch to zigzag but I'm really not use to doing it. Have fun. :thumbup: |
When you put the glue on, does it stretch the fabric? I hand applique and this sounds great. The thread is always getting caught on the pins, even though they are so tiny.

I use a glue stick as well, I don't often use wonder under anymore. The gluestick works wonders and sticks very well when ironed over with a dry iron to stick it on. Alot less expensive as well! And you get a softer feeling quilt in the end, because it all washes away

I use Elmers Washable School glue and it works fabulous. Wonder Under does have its moments; but I enjoy using it also. Have a great time appliqueing.

Just get yourself the glue sticks, and when something is coming loose, just rub the stick a little under the applique, don't have to use a lot, press it down, and you are good to go. Be sure and don't iron on all of your appliques at once. Iron some on, then applique them and iron on more. Do the ones that have to overlap together. I always position my applique pieces, and before I iron them on, I always put a tiny rub of the glue stick under each one, just to tack it down, like a bit of a stitch would. If you iron everything on at once, while you are stitching and moving your quilt around, they will tend to come loose. Hope that helps.
I like Heat n Bond the best, much better than Wonder Under. Don't use basting spray. You will have a complete mess all over your project. |

I am doing it all by machine. The pins are a good idea....not sure why I didn't think of that. The glue doesn't stretch anything. Use only a wee bit, not a whole lot. Practice on something first.
