New to the board
I am new to the board as of today and fairly new to quilting, 1 quilt in the last 10 years. I am interested in paper piecing, is it for beginners?
|
it's for beginners but do not think it will be quick... every time i decide to do it again for the 'tiny, detailed' capabilities, i get frustrated and do something else.. it takes a long time to do one block.... not for me, but you might love it...

Welcome from Indiana! I like paper piecing too! Don't get discouraged and you can find lots of tutorials on the internet as well as free patterns. Take it slow and don't give up too quickly, you will really appreciate the sharpness of your points. Paper piecing is the only way I can do a log cabin block and not have it come out wonky!!!

Some paper piecing is, the hexagons I love and have done it often. That's what I started on and like to do because you can take them anywhere, such as Doctors offices and do it while you wait.

Welcome from Ontario, Canada. There are beginner paper pieced patterns. Start there and soon you will be surprised at how quickly you can move to more advanced patterns once you have the basics mastered.

Welcome from NE Ohio.

Welcome from Texas! I enjoy paper piecing--it's just different and a break from traditional piecing, plus you can get some great block designs that you can't get with traditional piecing. Don't make the mistake that I did and start out with something too tiny and complicated.

Welcome to the Board. It's amazing. I haven't done much paper piecing - I'm still learning. There is so much knowledge and talent on this board - you can't help but learn something.

Welcome from Ohio!
Paper piecing was the very first thing I learned in quilting. I'm still loving it and I'm quilting now for a very, very long time.:p Don't think you are not able to do it or it just looks to hard. Sit down and start whatever you want to do, you'll get the hang of it, just like you did many times before. In my opinion the only failure you can have is, not to try. Hey and even the long time quilter still makes mistakes. Believe me, I talk from experience. :o |
I think paper peicing can be wonderful for a beginner. Do a several practice pieces from Carol Doaks web site , as suggested earlier, using scrap fabric. It took me a few to get the hang of it( it was the flipping part) , but once I did ... no stopping.. just kept looking for more and more patterns.
It does take more time, so if you are looking for a quick method , paper piecing is not it. But if you are looking for amazing results that are next to impossible to achieve any other way , especially for a beginner, go for it. Look for patterns that have larger pieces, no curves, and starch your fabrics prior to cutting. |
welcome! I have just started PP... it is a bit difficult when you first start... I tend to get frustrating but am sticking with it because I enjoy a challenge. I LOVE the end result of PP.... go ahead and try it!

Thanks everyone, I am so glad I happened upon this board!

Welcome to quilting from Texas. This is a very wise board, take their advice.

Another welcome from Texas! I am fairly new to the site - but have learned so much already. I do a lot of searches, find a lot of great information that I didn't even know I didn't know! This is a wonderful website. :-)
I actually signed up for a paper piecing class that starts next week - but am a little concerned as it seems the patterns might be more involved. Going to talk to the LQS that is offering them. I have watched several YouTube videos on it though - and it looks like you can create some very nice things with the paper piecing that would be difficult or impossible any other way. It is not fast - but it does produce some very detailed blocks. |
Welcome from NE PA.......you'll like it here. Great at answering quilting questions, find a pattern and pics of quilts are gorgeous. Talented bunch here !
