Sometimes I draw around the template and then cut out the fabric or if the templates are thick enough, I use my rotary cutter to cut around them.

Trace around the template, and then you can use that line and your ruler and rotary cutter.

On the back-side of the fabric with whatever you can find that will show. I use a regular #2 pencil or ball point pen (whichever I grab) but on dark fabric, I use a white or yellow chalk pencil. Also, make sure your templates have included the seam allowance or you will want to cut 1/4" away from the tracing lines.

There are very small rotary cutters out there you can buy that are great for cutting around templates.

You have to cut the templates out first.
