I have not tried it on these colors, I am only repeating what my dealer told me and others that were with me.

I saw one at a recent quilt show!

I am sorry should not have been so short with my answer. Resently I used the dark blue to make a quilting pattern on the sashing of an opportunity quilt. In the process of pressing the sashing the markings would vanish so I would put the quilt in the frezzer until they would come back. When we were all done we washed the quilt and than put in the frezzer, no markings. I really think this would work for all the colors. I am now using the red to make for a piece of redwork embrodery.

I bought these when taking a class at LQS and havw had no problems. I use to mark diagonal lines on quilt tops. hit with iron after done and like magic, it's gone!

bonnyh 10-28-2011 05:58 AM

As a note - if the fabric gets real cold, the marks will come back. They can be removed again by ironing. I learned that from a quilting friend in Canada and thought I would share.

patdesign 10-28-2011 06:03 AM

Yes I have some of these, but after reading some of the posts on this board and then stupidly pressing the pattern I had just drawn, I gave up!:)

sha'z 10-28-2011 06:06 AM

how often would a quilt freeze is my question? lol

dottientx 10-28-2011 06:24 AM

I don't know why some get such variants when using these pens. I've been using them for FMQ since they first came out and have never had any poblem with the markings showing up in cold temps. I put a ziplock bag of my practice samples in the freezer for over a week and the ink never showed up again. I'm wondering if some are purchasing pen similar but not the Pilot Frixon pens or it Pilot vary the ink from pens to pens. I wouldn't think so. They worked great for me when I was learning (an am still learning) how to FMQ. I purchased mine from Staples

Skittl1321 10-28-2011 06:24 AM

For those worried about leaving a chemical in the fabric, the ink in these pens is acid free and archival quality (though the people at pilot thought I was crazy for asking that- they highly do not recommend using them for archiving, due to the ink disappearing at high temperatures- not good for long term storage, where it might disappear)

The chemicals will not harm fabric. And, it washes out anyway, so it is really only a concern if you aren't washing it.

The temperature is below freezing here at night already. I just shipped a quilt to my sister. If I had used this pen to mark the top, it is possible the lines would appear in shipping.

helenhiwater 10-28-2011 06:30 AM

I just discovered a disappearing fabric marker at Michael's for about $3.00. It goes on purple and disappears after about 48 hours. I think it is the greatest thing since peanut butter, but have only used it on cotton doll faces and seam markings for clothes so far. On quilts I usually use soap slivers.

dottientx 10-28-2011 06:34 AM

I've never questioned the 'Pilot' brand since I've had no problem but wondering what the Pilot company would say!

During the coldest part of winter, I would say my quilts freeze every night!!! That happens when there is no heat in the room, and you can't afford to run portable heaters.

elm 10-28-2011 06:42 AM

I got mine at an office supply store. Can't remember if it was office depot or staples.

good grief, Sandra H I just noticed you have my married Sister's name! funny.

PS Stitcher 10-28-2011 06:49 AM

You can purchase them at Staples. Ours only had black, blue and red.

You can get them at LQS's as well.

I have used them quite a bit and LOVE them!

Pete 10-28-2011 06:50 AM

I bought one and loved it - marked all my squares --- ironed my first seam and my markings disappeared! Had to remark. Also heard not to get it cold as the marks reappear!

pkelly1947 10-28-2011 06:59 AM

When I saw them on this board, I ran to Staples & got some. They work great, but some times I forget the ink disappears when you iron the fabric.

You need the oil filled radiator heater. It heats a big room, cost pennies to use, and very safe. Before the central heat was installed in our lower floor, I used one to heat two big rooms. It worked great. And the heater isn't an eyesore in the room. I bought these heaters one year for my kids. Both were on a budget and these heaters really cut their heating bills. They still use them. The more efficient ones will cost about twice the price, that's the reason for the price difference. I've seen them at Walmart, Target for about $40. It will save money to get the better one for $80 or more.

calla 10-28-2011 07:05 AM

I just used mine, for marking class samples with Sue Nickels...........I haven't yet ironed or frozen nor washed the blocks........so I don't know............calla

GlitzyMe 10-28-2011 07:27 AM

This is one of those things that makes me a little upset. I bought this set of 4 colors (red, blue, black, green) in a package for $5.99 at Staples. Some LQS are doing the same thing then selling them individually for $3 each.
If you go to a Discount Auto you can buy a pen sized telescoping magnetic tool (pin picker-upper) for 99¢. One of the notions companies has packaged it and sells it for $6.99. The same with mechanics' magnetic dishes for nuts and bolts.....now they are pin cups at a 100% plus markup.
My suggestion is if they want us to pay the increases in fabric costs then stop trying to empty our wallets by cheating the customer. At least, it's cheating to me.

grumpy90650 10-28-2011 07:27 AM

i am going to look for this pen at the quilt show here in houston next week!!!

Walgreens has them too. So far I haven't had any trouble with them.

[quote=sewnsewer2]BEWARE!! The pen marks will disapear with heat, but if it gets cold (like up north), they will reappear!

Sounds like you could write a hidden message with one of the pens...Imagine....make a patchwork scarf for a child off on their own...it gets cold, suddenly a message appears on the scarf...."Wait, think, what would your mother say about this?"....Or maybe on a quilt.."Who loves you baby...Mom does" I think the fact that is appears in the cold could be used for added fun. As for quilts, mostly they are in the house where it is usually warm. I do not store many quilts in the freezer but if I do and the marks come back maybe a trip to the dryer or ironing board would teach it a lesson. I have these pens and use them with the same care as I would any other tool.

Maggieloe 10-28-2011 08:10 AM

Getting ideas as well. Clues for a treasure hunt, that the hero makes disappear by ironing them. Wonder if this works on paper too.

LastGrandma 10-28-2011 08:51 AM

I love the Frixion pens...have used them with quilts and regular sewing of dresses and pants (marking darts and notches). No problems and they are so much cheaper at the Office Supply Store!

Lady Diana 10-28-2011 09:01 AM

We had a thread on this already. The pens are made by Pilot, they also have highlighters that erase. Both were made for students....now quilters and sewers have discovered them. I use them for tracing my redwork.
Heat erases the lines, cold (in frig or freezer) will bring them back. If you use an iron on the piece, then wash it before drying in dryer, the marks will be gone for good.
You can purcahse these at Staples, Walgreens for much less than LQS. They come in red, blue, green, black, purple and orange. Watch for them each year during back to school time. I bought them at 50% off plus a $4.50 rebate at Walgreens during back to school....so they were about .75 each.

Cathy A. 10-28-2011 09:09 AM

I've these pens at Target in the supplies dept.

calla 10-28-2011 09:27 AM

kellen, actually yrs ago my DH had swim trunks, that when dry was just orange however, when they got wet turtels appeared..........they were so neat............I hope someone here comes up with the method here at this site so we could all do that with fabric.....ppl here are so clever.........calla

MaggieMeg 10-28-2011 09:31 AM

It is a Pilot Frixion. My hubby bought me a set of them. I love em!! They are called erasable pins, but they disappear with the heat of the iron.

Yes that would be neat....there is always an up to any downside....

kellen46 10-28-2011 09:44 AM

Speaking of pens....Sharpies has new pen out called Stained that is just for marking on fabric...I have seen samples done as graffiti on canvas shoes..any other unusual ideas...Also if you color some lines and such on cotton or silk fabric with sharpie markers, then spray with rubbing alcohol the inks will bleed and blend and can be heat set for permanence. I have done some silk scarves and and on fat quarters I really like the effect...anyone else tried this?

Olivia's Grammy 10-28-2011 12:39 PM

I bought my set at Target. I marked very heavy with the red on a white fabric. The red did come out with the heat of the iron, but you could still see where it had been. I will use them for some things, but to mark tops.

Up North 10-28-2011 12:42 PM

Here is another posting that just came up on this pen.

I know that it's true the marks come back if you put your quilt in the freezer, but who in real life does that? Maybe, in the old days, when the Super Bowl was held in outdoor stadiums in weather so cold the coffee froze it would have made a difference if you wrapped up in a quilt but now, unless you left your quilt in your car in a blizzard, what are other circumstances where the mark would get cold enough to come back? froggyintexas

debcavan 10-28-2011 02:30 PM

They are cheaper in office supply stores. They were not made for quilters but as an erasable gel pen..

I got some on sale 2 for $3.75 in a small town hardware store.

I have read that this pen will show its markings again if it gets down to a certain temperature, but I don't remember what that temperature was. FYI to check on.

Oops I should have read previous emails.
