New FMQ tool-really cheap

I just discovered that the elastic exercise bands are GREAT for replacing FMQ gloves. I've used gloves and really like them, except for having to remove them every time I stop and need to use my fingers or hands to do something else.

Hubby uses the exercise bands for stretching exercises and mentiond that "they sure won't slide"...made me think I'd try it for FMS....and by golly, it works, not only does it work, but it works GREAT and leaves my hands and fingers free to remove pins, cut threads, etc....WOW!! I first tried a longer piece across the width of my hands, but that didnt leave me room to work close enough to the needle. Then I tried two pieces, one on each side of the needle, and BINGO!!! works like a charm, and your fabric absolutely does not move under the bands, but glides easily under the needle.....try it!

Forgot to mention that I just bought 3 new exercise bands at walmart for around $5.00 and one band can be cut into several pieces, and may last forever.

Thank you for a great idea. I have several old ones I can cut up and use.

Neesie 08-08-2012 09:51 AM

Fantastic idea!!! I've even got some of those bands . . . somewhere . . . . Needless to say, I haven't been using them, lately. :p

DonnaC 08-08-2012 10:21 AM

Finally, a GOOD reason to use those bands...LOL! I have to try this!

Tartan 08-08-2012 10:47 AM

And you/we can now tell everyone that we were "just using our exercise bands" ............... and stop short of saying HOW we were using them!

TexasGurl 08-08-2012 11:55 AM

LOL Great idea for "using" our bands !! I have a couple, will have to try this out !

ArtsyOne 08-08-2012 11:55 AM

Thank you so much for this tip - and the tip about getting them at WalMart!

annthreecats 08-08-2012 12:07 PM

Nanaquilts44 08-08-2012 12:31 PM

Super good tip! I have a couple sitting in a drawer somewhere.

alfosa421 08-08-2012 01:29 PM

Cool idea I wonder if the no skid stuff you get at the dollar store would work too I'm going to give it a try. Thanks for sharing

joyce888 08-08-2012 01:50 PM

Great idea, thanks!

patsynel 08-08-2012 02:13 PM

Great idea, thanks.

Why wouldn't the rubberized shelf lining work just as well? I have lots of that around that I could cut into workable pieces and use on each side of the machine needle. Thanks for the tip. Or you could even use those round rubber disc like jar operners also.

AuntieD 08-08-2012 05:13 PM

Thank you for the tip!

irishrose 08-08-2012 05:54 PM

I knew there was a reason I kept the pieces of the last one that snapped. This looks like a good idea.

nativetexan 08-08-2012 07:19 PM

Hmmmm, I have some of those somewhere too! thanks.

bstock 08-08-2012 07:25 PM

What a great tip!! You should send it to Fon's and Porter's! Maybe you could win a free subscription!!

jitkaau 08-09-2012 03:21 AM

I do this with the stuff you put under bowls and glasses to stop them from slipping. A bit cheaper than exercise bands at $2 per mat.

Shelf liners work wonderfully. I had a teacher recommend that to me before.

The shelf liner doesnt work under my foot control, it's on carpet and I chase that thing all over the floor. Gonna try the exercise band trick...just checked that out....it holds better than the shelf liner... It seems to hold to the carpet, but the control slips on the exercise band, I think if I added double sided tape to the bottom of the foot control that it will hold....Yep...thats the fix! WOOHOO, no more chasing that dang thing around, but it did give me a little stretching exercise...LOL

I never thought of using the exercise bands for fmq. I will have to get some. I WILL definetely try the rubber grippers from the dollar store. I actually use it in the drawers of my sewing desks to keep things from slipping and sliding around in the drawer. Thanks for sharing.

Have a blessed day.

Another suggestion is clean un-used magic erasers.....one in each hand palm works well....

kaylfordsollimo 08-09-2012 08:05 AM

What department would these be in? Another things to hide along with the items we find in hardware that are not meant for quilters' use.

debbieumphress 08-09-2012 08:14 AM

What a great tip, I have so many of those rubber straps from doin physical therapy on my arm. Love it.
Hope you don't mind if I pass this on to friends.....thank you.

Thanks for the idea!

Thanks for the tip, that is what I like about the board. Every one on the board is so smart and sharing.

I had a bunch of the non-skid shelf liner (like they sell at the dollar store) and cut several strips about 3" x 4". It works really well, and doesn't slip. Don't like it as shelf liner because it doesn't allow things to glide. Go figure.......

At Walmart they're with the exercise stuff in the sporting goods. I would imagine any drug store might have the exercise bands too.

trolleystation 08-09-2012 04:31 PM

Wonderful idea...thanks so much.

AshleyR 08-09-2012 04:56 PM

Someone on the board mentioned they used glycerin and I tried it and it's great! I'll never go back to gloves/rubber/shelf liner, etc again!! Just a drop will last a really long time!

rhilkey 08-09-2012 04:59 PM

The rubbery "shelf paper" works too.
