I like the look of this bedspread, but obviously it's not a real quilt; it's just a print of a patchwork. From looking at it, though, I do have a question. I like how the patchwork squares what seems like a ribbon trim on them.

Is there any reason you couldn't do this in real life with a real quilt? My first quilt will likely involve very simple squares, and this might give the quilt a little more life?

are you talking about the small strip that separates the larger squares? If so, that's called sashing and is very common and very easy to do. Instead of using ribbon, I'd look for a fabric with stripes on it that can be cut to look like the ribbons. Does that answer your question? It's a beautiful quilt and can be easily done with quilting fabrics.

There is no reason you couldn't do that quilt in real life. You could either piece a narrow sashing, or fussy cut some stripe fabric. If you want to keep it simple I would go with the stripe.

You could piece the squares together first, then sew the ribbon down on top of the seams. Kind of like sewing ric rac. Buy a good quality ribbon though.

Those large squares would be good for a large print.

You can definately do anything you want on a quilt and put anything you want on it. Just remember, some things are more durable than others.

Ribbon can shrink with wash asnd make a puckery seam. I would use narrow sashing. Using a stripe would work, fussy cutting it, but need to be careful and use exact seaming or it will be noticable, will look wavy.

That's an easy pattern to do for your first quilt.

I would use a flange or piping. Both of which are really really easy to do.

You could make this quilt with one or more layer cakes(10 inch squares). It would be beautiful and you would have an assortment of fabrics in one line of fabric. Just an idea.

Welcome from Arizona. This is a great first quilt to make all the standard size blocks and 1" or 2" connecting strips are all straight cuts and the backing is attached by a standard binding. If you feel over whelmed feel free to send out an SOS on this topic site and help will rally around and guide you through. There are tutorials on this site that can help you learn bindings and any other issues you may encounter.
