New Iron
I want to buy a new iron for my daughter and would like the kind that lifts up from the board when not using. Don't know what it is called and if anyone knows where the best price can be found, please post it on this board. Thanks.

Oliso is the iron
|
I saw Jenny (Missouri Star Quilts) use one in a video. Maybe their site has them for sale.

Oliso iron
About $160 Target, Amazon carries them. My quilt guild purchased 6 of them last year for our workshops, and unfortunately the general opinion is that they do not get hot enough. But the self lifting feature is innovative. |
I see Jenny Doan on Missouri Star Quilt Co use one when she does her tutorials and they look very nice to use but I don't have any feed back for you. Good luck on your search.

They're by Oliso. I have the yellow one and really like it - my wrist was getting aggravated when I ironed lots of blocks, and I figured it was from tipping the iron onto its end. The Oliso has been great; I can press seams for hours now! I find that it gets hot enough.
I'm not in the US, so I don't know all the places they're available, but I have seen good prices on Amazon. |
I like my yellow Oliso. It gets hot enough for me. Contrary to most here, I don't want my iron too hot. I feel that while it does press the fabric very flat, it's probably not good for it. Just like a hot dryer isnt' good for fabric. I got mine from Bed, Bath and Beyond and they allowed me to use my 20% off coupon which really helped. They also shipped it to me free.

expensive isn't always great. i've heard bad things and good things on almost every iron. some places have sales, good luck.

I'm sold on my Oliso iron and would replace it, should anything ever happen.
The auto-lift feature can be disabled if you choose. However, like Jennifer23, it has been a saving grace re physical issues. It has definitely help alleviate shoulder problems I was having. DolphynGyrl ... As for concerns re fires, when using other irons. Yes, I am sure it could happen, as you develop a different habit in using the Oliso. Just the same as the first while you have it, you want to stand it on end. However, if you leave it down, in error ... I am sure you would "smell" the burn, long before flames. As with any iron, you really should turn it off, when you leave the room. Not doing so, probably causes a lot more fires than any Oliso-iron-user has ever caused from mis-use of a conventional!! |
They have a grey one at Costco.com. My daughter bought one from there and loves it.
If it ever breaks, you can always return it to Costco. |
I have a yellow Oliso and love it. There is a button on the very back that I believe disables the lift option. It's hot enough for my fingers and it is set on the second mark on cotton. It seems to love to be filled with distilled water.

I just started using an Oliso. I'm not 100 percent sold on it yet. It does leak occasionally, I think it gets plenty hot. It takes a little getting used to the auto lift but I like that feature. One down side is you get so used to the auto lift that when you use another iron, you forget to set it up. I have the blue Oliso which is not quite as big or expensive.
|
One thing to check on any iron is the wattage. I believe 1800 is the highest you can get. I bought a Singer with 1700 wattage and it is great, no leaking and gets hot enough for me for less than $100.

I also heard good and bad things about the Oliso iron - I think it's rather expensive too. I think it would be nice to have one as I love the features.

Well, I am one who had a bad experience with the one I owned, I had the yellow one, expensive, I paid 169.00 for it and loved it, it got hot enough and I thought this is my forever iron, well less than a year it was burned up. I was ironing and kept smelling something like hot wires, everything seemed ok at the time, then all of a sudden smoke rolled and it popped, it burned up right before my eyes. I talked to another lady at the Quilting Guild and She had the same iron and had the same experience. I loved the iron but will never buy an expensive iron again, I now own an iron I got from Savers for $2.10 and it works great, lol.....gets plenty hot and is a Sunbeam, love it.
I have an older Sunbeam that still works. It doesn't steam enough to suit me. |
Oh! I think you should get her a cordless iron. I bought mine with the idea that I would see how I like it. I absolutely love it, and if it broke today I would immediately buy a new one. Remember how you felt the first time you used a cordless phone? I couldn't get used to the fact that I could move around where ever I wanted to. That feeling of freedom is exactly how I feel with my cordless iron. It makes a world of difference when you are using the iron. I really love it at home, and I brought it with me to use in our 5th wheel, and I really really love it now. I will never go back to a corded iron.

I have a blue Oliso and I don't remember where I bought it but I paid $69 for it. It works great and doesn't leak or start fires or any other shady things
|
I have an iron rest, actually one for each iron. I just slide it over. My mother always had an old gas stove grate she sat the iron on. We all had a tendency to knock it down or brush against it or not look and just grab it.
|
I bought my Oslio from Joanns with a coupon. Was around $60. Not the most expensive, but have had it for about a year and no problems. Really like it.
|
I love my yellow Oslo, the auto lift, and the extra long cord that comes with it. It uses tap water (it will leak if you use distilled water....yes, I e-mailed the company). I will replace it with another when it dies.
|
Please try a non-fancy iron -- the Black and Decker you can get from WalMart for about $12. I've had mine for a long time and it works like a charm! Gets hot swiftly, makes steam, is solid and dependable.
|
I have the yellow Oliso iron from Amazon (I had gift cards). It is a LOT heavier than my old workhorse iron from the 90s, and I had a heck of a time remembering NOT to set it on it's end. But once I got used to that, I love it. You can fill it with water right from the tap, it produces lots and lots of steam and I find it to be plenty hot enough for all my projects. I'm not sure the difference is between the other colors that are offered, like pink. I think you daughter would love it. ~smile~

I have one and absolutely love it. I purchased mine online from "Newegg". I got a good deal on it and I use it every day. Good luck finding one!!

I had an Oliso 8-9 yrs ago and liked it. Just under 1 yr. the feet started popping in & out when ever. I could be ironing & there they were, then in & press a bit & out they came. Did it when I set it on end also. So I went back to my 30 yr old Gen. Elec. Last yr at the AQS show in Grand Rapids I purchased a Panasonic 360 & love it. Cordless is wonderful & the fact that both ends are pointed is also a plus. It cost just under $100 & am very glad I didn't talk myself out of buying.
