The only reason I've ever used a thread/spool holder that wasn't on my machine was if the spool was oversized or the thread was "squirrley" (kind of curly). Squirrley threads keep unthreading itself because it is too stiff to relax. Most of those are metallics or the nylon invisible thread and I want to stretch and straighten them out a bit so that they fed through the machine better.) I'm not so sure that the way they come off the spool is as important as the texture of the thread itself.

I bought a plastic one from Joann's and it actually works better than I thought it would.

I use the free glass "jar" that comes with kraft parmesan to hold my thread. It is great for invisible thread and with the holes already in the top no need to do anything but put the thread thru one.

A word of warning about the "cone holders" from Joann's: they are plastic and not very durable, do a little research and find a metal one---I have a metal one with a cast iron base, very sturdy and durable---but I got it from a friend and have no idea where she got it.

Let us know what kind of machine you bought that has all the different stitches you wanted.

I would like to have a new machine one of these days and thought I would get one that also did embroidery, if I it wasn't too costly. But one with many decorative stitches would be OK.

I took some sewing classes when I got my new Jenome. They talked about thread and told us that if the thread is wound in a diamond pattern on the spool it can be used either on the vertical or horizontal stem holder. Otherwise it should be in the vertical position.

Also don't pull thread out of the machine by pulling on the spool. Cut the thread and pull it out from the needle. This is a hard habit for me to break! I understand it's all because of the computerized machines.
