Would it be worth $25 for a 4 yo singer that may need some work? The lady that has it says that the needle moves to the left when sewing, and I'm not sure how expensive this might be to fix. It seems like it would have a lot more features than my current old machine so I'm sort of looking for feed back on if I should spend the money on it or wait. Please help. THank you.... :D

If you have $25 to blow, I'd definitely say it's worth it. If you take it to the shop, you may find it's simple fix and will cost very little. OTOH, if you get an estimate for a lot of money, you could always list it on Craiglist or something for parts and hopefully get your $25 (or more) back. I hope you get what's behind door #1.

depends on what it is - if it's a $2000 embroidery/sewing machine that can be fixed - maybe if the motherboard doesn't need replaced...
if it's a $79.99 bargain from Joanns or Hancocks or Walmart - no
And that's a major reason I like the old mechanical machines - no electronic stuff that goes blooie....

Not sure if she would be willing to let me take it or not. She did say that she might be willing to take less since there is not instruction manual. So I thought that maybe if I offered maybe $20 that she might go for it. I could always get it fixed later when I get back to work also and have a lil extra to spend. It is a singer model 1725, so I'm not sure what all it does but hoping someone can help on that also. Thank you :D

In my area it can cost 50.00 just to walk the machine thru the door, add that to the 20.00 you spend to buy it and you are almost at a new machine.

Just checked my email about the $25 singer. I had sent her a message that I had changed my mind due to checking finances. (which are extremely tight this week) She emailed me back that I was the only person interested in it and if no one else wanted it would I be interested if she decides to "freecycle" the machine. Of couse I said that I would be. Does anyone think that this would be a Not a good thing to do because of what it MAY cost to repair?

My old Centennial machine has something like 18 different stitches including buttonholes, but is about ready to "kick the bucket". Make do or do with out right ladies and gents? LOL Thanks for reading :D

For free , go pick it up and see if a good cleaning will do the trick . If not call around and see what service people charge to look at them, maybe explain over the phone what the problem is and see what they say. If its not feasible to fix you are out nothing and can junk it .

I say, for free, it's definitely worth taking and playing with!!! Then decide if you think you want to get it repaired.

For me - at my local machine shop it would be about $85.00 for a regular tune-up and cleaning, etc. - not sure what it would be if I actually had to order a part..you may end up with just an adjustment or you may need to spend a lot more.....for $25.00 I would take the chance...it may just be a minor thing.

If it's an older Singer I would take a chance on it. If it's a newer Singer I would pass. The problem with the newer machines is they have metal mechanical parts but plastic casings which are notorious for falling apart. It would be worthwhile to fix an older machine.

This is an approximately 4 year old singer, that when sewing the needle moves to the left. It is model #1725 that at wal-mart is about $90. The lady just emailed me today and is going to give it away. I figure that I can't go too far wrong in getting it. I know of a gentleman who does repairs out of his home for a little bit of nothing also. And if it would be too much to fix it...nothing says that I have to do so. well today was the day. I finally got to go pick up the singer #1725. The lady was giving it away because no one else was interested in it. Guess what?!!! It really isn't anything major that the needle moves to the left. The switch holding the needle to the middle or right/left won't stay is all. Nothing else wrong with it. Just need to download the manual for it and I'm good to go with it. :D Great luck in a freebie I think :D :D

The cleaning and maintenance may cost you more than a new machine. I think I'd take that $25 and tuck it away somewhere and keep adding to it until I had enough money to buy a new machine of my choice. If it's free though, it wouldn't hurt to get it and try working on it yourself. If it's not a go in a short time, you can always ditch it.

The machine was free and it isn't something major like I thought it might be. Just a matter of the lever not staying put when in the middle position. Should be an easy enough fix. Went tonight and got it before the ice storm hits :( Hope that DH makes it home before it gets really bad in the am. :)

Hey as long as it stitches nicely, you can play with it and adjust your sewing line to get the seam you need ! :wink: Have fun :lol:

Free is always a good price - I can't see where you could go wrong. You can sew with the needle to the left and not hurt a thing. I have a 45 yr. old Singer 328K and the needle can be left - center - right .

well....since the machine was free....I let my 22 yo son take it apart. Guess What?? It was something so simple to fix. All he had to do was push one piece back into place and now the needle will stay where it is supposed to....left/right/middle. Doing the happy dance now. Cleaned it up while we had it apart also. It certainly seems like a nice little machine and not huge and heave like my old centennial. The centennial is made of some sort of metal and is super heavy to try to move. Free turned out to be so way cool this time. I guess I got lucky :D

Free is always a good price! If things pick up for you with finances, you canb still use it as a trade-in.
