I've had my feet wear out but never a foot! BTW even people who know everything can be wrong! hehehe!

My grandmother said there are no rules.

I would just read the instructions that came with the walking foot. Mine says the stitching isn't suppose to be above a certain size.

I am a beginner/intermediate quilter. The only way I've sewn binding on a quilt is to see the binding on the top and hand stitch on the back. I've never used the walking foot for this. If you use a decorative stitch do you see the binding on the back with a straight stitch and then use the decorative stitch on the top, or do you see both sides at once?

Just a thought... I have met people like that and decided to take advantage of their knowledge. I asked for their help, complimented their work and spent time with them. In all cases it was my gain...in knowledge and in new friends ! Often such a persona is just their way of dealing with their own discomfort.
As I said just a thought!

I have used my walking foot with my Bernina 1031(new 1992), it has the wide slot in the foot, so quilting with the serpentine stitch has never been a problem.
Don't let the Know-it-all get in your way.

I can't do all that hand work to hand sew the binding down. I sew the binding to the back of the quilt first and then turn it over to the front and sew it down with either a straight or decorative stitch.

I think she's full of hooey. It's the needle that moves from side to side & that has no effect on the walking foot UNLESS the opening is not wide enough to accommodate this movement. I have had a Bernina 820, several Singers & I now have a Husqvarna Viking Designer EPIC & I have done this with all of the walking feet & have never had an issue with any of them. I also know someone who thinks she knows everything also & trust me, they don't. No one knows everything but it's very seldom that anyone challenges them so they continue with their behaviour.

Exactly. I use my walking foot for all sewing. My Bernina with a built in walking foot, same thing...all sewing.

I checked this out with my son who is a Bernina Tech (for 31years) he said it does not harm the walking foot to sew "fancy stitches" only don't do reverse with the walking foot , not good for it ,that was a good question as I didn't give it another thought to not sew fancy stitches. Cathy

Well shoot! Something else I must be doing WRONG! I love the Janome serpentine stitch for quilting with my walking foot. Interesting topic.

I read the same thing about the walking foot. But, as we all know, quillters break the rules.

Mdegenhart 02-28-2017 06:21 PM

My Janome 6600P manual specifies straight stitch modes only for the dual feed foot.

It alters the timing/movement and messes with the machine correctly forming decorative stitches. Serpentine may be gently curved enough to work okay.

I have used the blanket stitch and other stitches with my walking foot and there is no damage--I also back up and no damage. Some people give information without checking the facts. You are right to do an eye roll--lol. There may be a difference with a dual foot and not a walking foot which is a separate item.

I had heard this years ago. Now it seems that technology has caught up with creativity. Sound like we need to check with our individual manufacturer.

I have also heard (or read) that you can't or shouldn't stitch backward with the walking foot. Is that the same situation? I've never found a need to go more than a few stitches backward with any foot, so I don't know what the fuss is. Some of the decorative stitches do involve going backward and forward a bit.
