New to panels - how would you quilt this?
 

I was at a shop hop last week, and found this beautiful panel. The picture looks dull, but the colors are really vibrant and just gorgeous. I thought I'd add a small scripture panel to it, but I'm stumped on how to quilt the rest of it. Any ideas you could throw at me would be greatly appreciated. :)

that is a cool panel. You could put extra batting under the flowers and quilt around them and to the padding under the bridge as well. In the flowers I would quilt into the flowers just a little to accent them.

The colors in this are just amazing. My hesitation to quilt around the flowers was that I wasn't sure if it would look right if I didn't do the individual flowers or not. Typically are panels just quilted all different ways, like straight lines where the grasses are, and wavy ones where the creek is? I thought this is a nice small project that would be easy to work on while I'm away from home, and I'm planning on handquilting it. How hard would trapundo (sorry, hope you know what I mean since I don't know how to spell it!) be? Never tried that.

How about using greens and doing the stems. If you put extra batting in behind the flowers, you'd be making a trapunto --- when you fill in the stems and the water, the flowers would stand out. Outline the bridge and outline the clouds, but throw in extra stitching to make the trees stand out.......???? I threw in some lines here to try to explain more.

I agree with Amandasgramma. Do some FMQ in the greenery ... not nec just the stems. You could use variegated green thread. Then use the blue thread on the sky and water ... maybe again a variegated thread.

Dee, this helps a LOT, thanks! SOOOO, my 'goal' with the panel could be to make it 3D-ish and try to make some thing 'pop'. Would I quilt it in all the same color, or change colors? I printed off your wonderful sketch so I don't forget what the heck I'm doing'. ;)

And I agree with Ali........That would be a FUN one to quilt -- yes, it would give it a dimensional look. It would be fun --- no lines to follow --- just stand there and PLAY!

Love the panel! I think a general stitching with the features of the fabric would work well. I like your scripture verse but I think I'd like it better located down in the right hand corner with the white Shasta daisies? If you move it there it would also be easier to quilt a rectangle around the edge first and then do the feature quilting up higher? Just my opinion though, do what you think will look best to you.:)
