I marked some pieces for applique (a number coordinating with sections of the pattern) less than two weeks ago. I ironed them yesterday. Sure, the dark ink came off, but left a white number on the fabrics! I don't know if it will come out in the wash, I haven't sewn the quilt yet. I had already pre-washed the fabric.
Luckily, I marked the pieces on the back, and it doesn't appear to have gone through the entire fabric. |
wow, that's a bit scary... could you do a test piece and wash it to see if it comes out then?
|
OK, I just washed it with Dawn, rinsed and ironed it dry. The white number is still there! This is on a kind of maroon colored cloth. I'm sure the mark is on the light fabrics too, just not as obvious.
I don't think I'll use it anymore.

I just posted about this a couple of minutes ago!
http://www.quiltingboard.com/t-163995-1.htm I was really disappointed. |
Same thing happened to me. It didnt dawn on me that that it was bleached. I thought it was just white. No wonder the white line wouldnt go away! Very disappointed too!

I have found that same thing on dark fabrics. Luckily it was just a small craft project that didn't matter. They are handy in the sewing room but you do have to watch what you do with them.

I thought I noticed something when I ironed it one time but didn't think too much of it since it was on the back. I figured it would go away when it was washed. Don't think I will be using them any more.

Thanks for the information.............. I just purchased a Sewline Fabric Pencil, but have not tried it yet.

I use the Sewline marker. It is chalk and I don't anticipate a problem with it. Used it for the first time to mark a baby quilt I am working on. I tested it on scraps of the same fabric, and the marks came right out. They don't last quite as long as some markers, but do show up on most fabrics. I think it is treated chalk, since the marks last longer than chalk

not come out after two washings and soaking in Shout. Use only the white and, I believe, there is a gray. Stay away from the green. |
What brand was the fabric? was it cotton? fabric line? I haven't had any problem at all with the original FriXion pens. The formula may have been changed in some batches of pens. It's not made for quilting or advertised for quilting, same with the washable markers. The formula changes all the time with those.

I use mine on cutting lines only and I don't make solid lines. Only a few little dots.

It was several different pieces of fabric from my stash, all cotton, no idea of the brand.

Did you use starch on the fabric; I read where that will affect it and there are threads here saying it isn't good on dark fabric. I wash mine with hot water and so far so good.
