New with question on stocking embroidery

I have some stocking tops backs and batting and cuffs (that I want to embroider names on) that I want to sew together. I have a friend who has an embroidery machine that is going to help do the actual embroidering since I have never done any myself, but I am not sure what parts of the stocking I should sew together before embroidering and which parts after. If anyone has some tips I would really appreciate it. Thank you so much.

I don't have an embroidery machine, but I would do the embroidery before cutting the fabric. I am thinking of the names being on the top band. I would love to see pictures when they are done. I would mark the area where I want the names to go but cut after, that way you don't have to be so fussy when centering the names.

I get requests for custom Christmas stockings every year. I use a very rich red stripe upholstery fabric and embroider snowflakes, the name and usually a small theme item (like hot peppers for a chili lover) on the foot part. For the top cuff I use a white long hair fake fur. Where ever you decide to put the design/name remember the area has to be flat for the hoop. I do all embroidery first, then sew the stocking together.

You'd be best to work this out with your friend ...
S/He knows what is do-able with the equipment s/he is working with, and his/her abilities .... and what would work with what supplies you already have as they may create limitations of their own.
