New quilter - need help with fabric requirements

I'm making a very generously sized throw quilt with a 24"x44" panel in the center. I'm going to do 3 plain borders around it - I want the panel to stand out - and I want the finished size to be about 58"x72". I know I want the border next to the panel to thinner than the other 2 borders. How do I figure out border size and fabric requirements? Please help!!

First of all, are your sure your panel is 44" wide?? Most are around 42.5" Here is a sample from EQ7. Quilt size finished is 58" x 72"
Panel size finished is 24" x 42"
1st side border are 2" finished; These are necessary to achieve your final quilt size
2nd Border 2.5" finished
3rd Border 5" finished
Outside Border 7.5" finished

Finished size does NOT include the 1/4" seam necessary on both side. Hope this helps. You might also look in Google under Panel quilts and see if there are any patterns that will help you with additional information.

my sugestion is to lay the fabric out and figure out how large you want your borders to be then go from there. I like a 1.5 or 2 " inner border then larger 3 to 6 " outer borders. just my thoughts. once you know how large the borders are then you can figure our the fabric you need. but the first would probably be 1/2 yard and the rest 1 yard just to be on the safe cutting side so that you can have a bit of error room. (i do this from mistake experience) as you get to be a better quilter you can be more accurate in your fabric numbers. but this is just me.
