New quilter

What else better to do during spring break than learn to sew by making your first quilt? She picked out her own fabrics the other day and picked the pattern from a quilt posted on the board yesterday. I cut the squares and showed her how to sew the first few together and she is doing it on her own now at a nice slow speed. Thanks goodness for blue tape and marking seam allowances on the machine. I admit, I'm kind of proud. :)

Be sure and post her first project. Love it when the wee ones want to learn our hobbies.

And you *should* be proud! How old is she?

That looks exactly like my sewing table LOL .

mike'sgirl 04-03-2013 01:15 PM

What a sweet picture! My DD also quilts when she has time. It's a wonderful thing when they follow in creating!

SherriB 04-03-2013 01:28 PM

Such a sweet picture!!! I hope my DGD will learn to love to sew. She is interested but can't sit still for more thanfa few minutes. My DD's never wanted learn. They love to ask Momma to do it for them instead. LOL!

Dolphyngyrl 04-03-2013 01:30 PM

I impatiently wait for that day with my little one, she is 3 1/2 and wants to learn now, but she is not very cautious so at this point it looks like she might have to be a good age to start

Ranchwife 04-03-2013 01:41 PM

She is 9. I started 4-H sewing at 9, so it is time for her to learn. She is doing a good job. I made her take out one seam that was just too wide, but other than that, I'm just letting her go. I'll get more picky when she is ready for me to teach her good construction, but I want her to enjoy the hobby first. She has almost made all 10 blocks!! I'll post pics when she finishes the top. I'm proud of my daughter. :o

what a special time to spend together... she will remember this her whole life.

narnianquilter 04-03-2013 03:02 PM

Awesome! I remember being her age and begging my grandma to teach me and she said I was too impatient. The request was repeated for YEARS until I finally taught myself! Now I look forward to teaching my daughter, should she want to learn. Hope you guys have fun together!

wolph33 04-03-2013 03:38 PM

that is great-sewing/quilting is a fun hobby.

MartiMorga 04-03-2013 03:44 PM

Love to see another generation continuing this craft. So many things in this world distract the kids from some of the most rewarding things, it is exciting to see a few see the fun and creativity and not the age of it.

Grandma Bonnie 04-03-2013 03:55 PM

What fun. Your daughter looks to be beautiful!! Her hair certainly is and it looks like she's concentrating well!!

jeaniedrain 04-03-2013 03:55 PM

You should be proud. Wishing I had a sewing buddy.

Stitchnripper 04-03-2013 06:01 PM

Very proud-worthy! She looks very competent sitting there! Show us her quilt when she finishes it!!!

nunnyJo 04-04-2013 03:41 AM

get them to loving it early

Dragonomine 04-04-2013 04:25 AM

Love it! What's the blue paint tape for?

tezell0801 04-04-2013 04:33 AM

Awesome! You should be proud. I know the quilt will be wonderfully made with love!

mighty 04-04-2013 06:42 AM

That is so wonderful!!!!!

Nammie to 7 04-04-2013 07:53 AM

My own were never interested in sewing and at that time I didn't quilt. Now my grands get to start when they are 7. They make their own pillowcases and feel so proud! When they are 9 they get to go to sewing camp for a week. Whenever they are here (by themselves) and want to sew we do it. I have project kits already made for them - includes pajamas, pillow cases and aprons. They sew I cut and press. We make a great team!

Ranchwife 04-04-2013 07:59 AM

I used it to make a 1/4 inch seam allowance on the machine. It is easier to butt the fabric up to the blue tape rather than follow the edge of the foot. Blue tape isn't as sticky and doesn't leave stick when it is removed.

Kudos to you for teaching her and not being a perfectionist at this stage of the game. She is so cute and concentrating so hard.

crafty pat 04-04-2013 08:55 AM

I made my first 4H project when I was nine and never stopped sewing. You should be very proud of her.

MamaDonna 04-04-2013 08:57 AM

This is AWESOME. My mom was always sewing and creative in making costumes and quilts etc. I got a small portion of that gene. I hope you have many many hours of quilting time together

narnianquilter 04-07-2013 04:08 PM

hey how is she doing? It sounds like the initial piecing is going well, has she gotten any further?

Emma S 04-07-2013 04:18 PM

Yet another link in the long line of quilters. Not only should you be proud of her but you should give yourself a pat for your time and patience. Hopefully you are making a quilting buddy for life.

She has finished all but the hand sewing on the binding. She did a wonderful job and I'm quite impressed with her sewing skills! I attached the binding because she isn't quite ready to have to be precise, but she did the rest. I had her zig zag for the quilting because some of her seams were a little short, but she did a great job!

You have every right to be proud. It's always nice to see children get started with sewing. It will be fun to see her quilt when she gets it done. Thanks for sharing.

Ranchwife 04-07-2013 09:04 PM

One idea for those of you working with young kids, have then sew on paper and make designs. It lets them get used to the feel of the machin, and working with the presser foot. My daughter would sneak to my machine when I wasn't looking with a blank sheet of paper when she was little. I think letting her do that gave her confidence at the machine. Also, having kids sew on lined paper helps them learn to sew in straight lines, as well as sewing over circles, squares, etc. Before my daughter's next quilt, I'll have her practice sewing straight lines on paper just so she can gain more confidence.

DOTTYMO 04-07-2013 10:37 PM

I started on a treadle after being shouted at for playing with the foot pedal. My nephews both learnt early 4 and 8 after they listened to a talk for me showing me the machine. They can both sew by hand . Not unusual in the extended family male or female do the same.

earthwalker 04-07-2013 10:46 PM

What a sweet thread. Well done for inspiring her creativity and allowing her to learn (surprising how many parents stifle their children). It looks just lovely, and I'm guessing it's the first of many. Thanks for sharing.
