If you have a Hancock Fabrics store near you they run their batik fabric on sale a lot. You can order it on line, but I like to avoid the shipping if I can. Oh, and by the way, I love batiks too. They are soooooo pretty.

Batiks are my very favorite. I use them for everything that I can. That is if I can make myself cut into them. I also used them for applique and didn't find any problems at all. But some do say they have problems with hand sewing and batiks. I have had a collection of batiks since the very first time I laid eyes on them, yrs. It wasn't until recently that I have been able to cut and use. Such a baby I am, but I just love them

There are places that you can purchase batiks online at a discount. Someone previously mentioned Thousands of Bolts. Another is Marshall Dry Goods http://www.marshalldrygoods.com/stor...;search]=batik. Their's are under $5/yd. I recently got some for the back & binding of a quilt and it was the same brand/quality that my LQS had. I do try to support my LQS whenever I can, but I am also trying to be careful due to the economy.

Welcome to the board from Missouri! And I LOVE batiks also, but watch for them on sale. I also have been able to visit Marshall Dry Goods in person and love their fabrics.
I also find fabrics at thrift sotre sometimes, but I LOVE new fabrics. Join a guild in your area and you will find out where they get their fabrics and learn where they shop to get their "fix"! :?

I can't thank all of you enough for your warm welcome and your wonderful suggestions. I never thought of using old clothing. I volunteer at a thrift store, so that is a great idea! I am currently working on a jean pocket quilt for my grandsons, and was able to get a great deal at Goodwill on jeans they were getting rid of. They sold a "rag bag" of old jeans for about $6.00 a huge bag. Huge blessing. I hope it is Ok to share, I am attaching a few images of the quilt I made for my grand daughter. I did not know they were having a girl when I started it, but thankfully God was leading me, for it turned out pretty feminie!

Here is one of the other quilts I made for my grandson. It was my first time doing applique. I used all flannel fabrics. A little difficult with the edges some times, but turned out fine.

Oh my goodness those quilts are great. Yes you have a natural supply of fabric, old shirts etc you can get from where you work.
