New rulers

I sure do need new rulers. But there are so many out there . What do you use?

Kathy Osterby 04-09-2013 08:21 AM

I'm still waiting until I can get Eleanor Burns 1/2 square triangle ruler but it's so much fun looking at all of them even if you really don't "need" them.

gigi712 04-09-2013 08:23 AM

Creative Grids all the way! They are easy to see and grip the fabric like no other ruler I've ever used. Slowly replacing all of the ones I use the most.

QuiltnNan 04-09-2013 08:27 AM

i think my first ruler was purchased at a quilt show. it's fluorescent with laser cut markings. it's 6.5"x24". this has been invaluable to me. the lines are very easy to read and thin enough to be very accurate. i wish i'd stuck to that type for all of my rulers.

Dolphyngyrl 04-09-2013 08:38 AM

I love my optimal the sad thing is you can't find the band anymore so when mine need replacing I will be sad

KarmPD 04-09-2013 08:41 AM

I love square rulers. I have a 6.5" I use for squaring pieces and I find it invaluable. I also have a 12.5 for squaring up and this is the best ever! I have the standard 6.5x24 as well for cutting strips of fabric as well as other assorted shapes. But, I would strongly recommend the square rulers to you, they are a favourite.

Same here - I really like these. But if you go to a LQS, see what brand they use and try them out - also if you have any friends you sew with. One of the things I have noticed is that the way the lines are or the coloring on some of them are harder for me to use. This doesn't mean they would be hard for everyone, I just noticed that my eyes seem to prefer one over the other, but my friend reads the ones I don't care for the best.

I currently have the Cut for the cure and lines going vertical I can see ok, but I have a hard time finding (easily) the vertical ones especially the 1/2 inch mark.

I've switched everything over to Creative Grids. The lines are clear and easy to see, but are thin. Some of the rulers I used to have had lines that were so thick that you could easily cut on one side or the other of 2 or 3 threads. Doesn't seem like much, but when you are looking for precise piecing and matching points, it matters!

Deb Tucker's 6" square up ruler is my go to. I have her 12" I just recently purchased, but haven't got the hang of that one yet although I'm having fun trying.

Ioftheneedle 04-09-2013 10:17 AM

Who carries Creataive Grid rulers? I don't remember seeing them.

nativetexan 04-09-2013 10:26 AM

I stick with Omnigrip rulers. I do however have one Creative Grid I believe. but my large and square rulers are all Omnigrip which I use the most.

KalamaQuilts 04-09-2013 10:27 AM

I know what I don't like...the ones with the lime green on them. For me, impossible to see through, and that is the point isn't it?

ArtsyOne 04-09-2013 10:33 AM

I've had my 5" x 24" ruler with the lip on the end for over 30 years and still use it for every project. It has angle markings as well as 1/8" markings and the lip is invaluable.

PaperPrincess 04-09-2013 10:47 AM

I have Omnigrid, but if I had to start all over, I think I would go for the Creative Grid. Used my girlfriend's and really liked it. It has built in grippies and seemed to stay in place better. I do think it's wise to stick with a single brand if possible.

CorgiNole 04-09-2013 10:51 AM

When I started buying rulers, I had not yet seen the tip to stick to one brand as the lines may be printed differently depending on the brand - so I have a combination of Omnigrid and Creative Grids rulers as well as a few specialty rulers. I reach for the Creative Grids rulers first.

Cheers, K

6 1/2 by 24" with the 1/2 inch on one side shaded. Makes cutting 1/2 inch increments so easy.

mike'sgirl 04-09-2013 02:26 PM

I'll tell you what I don't like so much, is my Omnigrid. I have two nice big ones, and with my aging eyes, they can be hard to read. I too, would suggest Creative Grids.

patchsamkim 04-09-2013 02:34 PM

I have mostly Omnigrid, but do have a few of the Creative Grid rulers, and am slowly changing over to them as I need new rulers. I think they are only available from quilt shops, not from the chain stores.

Grandma Bonnie 04-09-2013 07:17 PM

Creative Grid rulers are on Amazon.

quilter2090 04-09-2013 08:01 PM

June Tailor's shape cut rulers. It makes strip cutting fast, accurate. Love them!

adamae 04-09-2013 08:43 PM

One of my favorite rulers is a slotted ruler. Makes accurate cutting easier for me.

Ruby the Quilter 04-11-2013 06:23 PM

I prefer Creative Grid think they are easier to read.

icul8rg8r 04-22-2013 02:46 PM

I **LOVE** the June Tailor Shape Cut Plus slotted ruler! Makes PERFECT strips, fast & easy. I recently purchased June Tailor's Half-Square/Quarter Square Triangles ruler, and found it also works great for squaring up squares. During Joann's last 50% off sale on quilting rulers, I purchased the June Tailor Diamond Cut ruler and her 2 1/2" Binding Buddy ruler, but I haven't had the chance to use them yet. LOVE June Tailor rulers!

quilter2090 04-22-2013 07:34 PM

June Tailor's Shape Cut rulers. I love it!

Maureen 04-22-2013 08:15 PM

Creative grids for me too. I just bought an 81/2 X24 in Lancaster. I love it

Maureen 04-22-2013 08:16 PM

You usually see them in quilt shops. I just bought one at the Lancaster show. 81/2 X24. I love it.

Mariposa 04-22-2013 08:36 PM

Most of mine are Omnigrips~ :)

DOTTYMO 04-22-2013 09:56 PM

I have just purchased westfalia rulers from Australia. They are great if you have hand problems. Expensive but worth it.

icul8rg8r 04-28-2013 01:48 PM

Thanks to the recommendation from this forum, I purchased my first CREATIVE GRIDS rulers (to add to my June Tailor slotted rulers) - and I **LIKE** them!!!! Since I couldn't decide which one, my dear husband bought me three - a 3 1/2" x 18 1/2"; a 6 1/2" x 24 1/2"; and a Two-In-One 12 1/2 Square It Up & Fussy Cut Ruler. All are non-slip, easy to read, nice thin lines. I'm in quilting heaven!!!

I also have all Omnigrids and Omnigrips. I have heard good things about the Creative Grids rulers, but haven't bought them because I do believe it's important to use all the same brand of ruler during a project if possible, and I don't feel like replacing all my rulers. Some quilters even recommend you stick to the exact same ruler all through a project, which I find impossible to do, because first I need a long ruler, and then a shorter one later.
