I really like the Janome brand sewing machines. They are user friendly and have everything that a quilters needs on them to make a beautiful quilt.

I would go and take a couple of days, and visit all the shops
that have machines, and just sit down and play, you will find the one for you, in your price range. Baby Lock, Bernina, Singer, Brother, you could get a good used machine from a trade up, too! But really you need to just go around and sew on them all, (it is sew much fun, too!) |

Congratulations on your new career. If I had that money I would buy the new Pfaff expression because I am a quilter and I love the way it sews and the eleven inch throat. Make sure you shop around. Also the new Janome Horizon looks nice but it didn't sew as nice as the Pfaff.

GOOD LUCK WHERE EVER YOU WORK. I WORKED L&D FOR 6 YEARS. I DID HAVE A VARIED CAREER. I ALSO WORKED 1 YEAR ON MED. SURG,14 YEARS IN HOME HEALTH AND 6 YEARS IN A COUNTY HEALTH DEPT. I LOVED MY NURSING CAREER. IT DIDN'T START NURSING SCHOOL TILL I WAS 34. I WAS MARRIED WITH A GREAT HUSBAND , 4 KIDS. THE YOUNGEST WAS 4 AND THE OLDEST 16. ALL GIRLS AND A 4 BEDROOM HOUSE TO CARE FOR. IT WAS THE HARDEST THING I EVER DID,BUT SO GLAD I DID. MY SISTER AND I GRADUATED TOGETHER. NOW 2 OF MY GIRLS AND MY NEICE ARE NURSES AND ONE OF MY GIRLS IS AN ENDOCRINE RESEARCH SCIENTIST.WE LIKE THE MEDICAL FIELD GOOD LUCK TO YOU.

Congratulations on your nursing degree and gift. I have 2 Berninas that are fun to sew on .My first is Activa 240 .It has lots of decorative quilting stitches 3 alphabet fonts so you can write things for quilt labels or for fun.mine was in your price range when I bought it new 5 years ago last year I moved up to Artista 630 because I wanted embroidery and a back up machine to use when one of them is being serviced.What ever machine you get make sure it has the features you want and have fun playing with all the great machines out there.

How do you like your 6600?? :) I forgot to say Congratulations on your graduation in nursing. I think at least if you get a machine with a harp space large enough to fmq you can. There are some very nice machines out there. Talk to the sells rep. and try them out. Good luck in your search. Keep us posted. :):):)

Congratulations on your Nursing graduation and may I say you have made the best career choice ever so rewarding. As far as the sewing machine I purchased a Brother that does everything I needed it to do. When and if the time comes when I want to get something that has more bells and whistles I will do it then. I have several other machines and each does something I like, some are computerized some are not but the one I use the most is the Brother or the Janome.

Instead of going for a machine that can both sew and embroider, I would get one machine dedicated to sewing and another machine for embroidery. Embroidery takes time to sew out; with two machines you can still be piecing while one machine works for you on embroidery. I would add that, for me, the sound of the machine is important. My Bernina purrs when I sew. Loud machines and clunky machines are annoying to me. However, YMMV! |

If it were me I would buy an entire collection of vintage machines but I am an enabler when it comes to the vintage machines. :mrgreen: But I would consider buying a Singer 500A loaded with all of the accessories and taking the rest of the money and buying fabric and what not. You can get a super nice one with everything for around $300 or less. Even though the machine was built in 1962 for only one year I would put it against any high end Bernina (like the new 830) and send it back to school. For a machine that is almost 50 years old that is saying something!! Billy |
No suggestions for a machine, but want to welcome you into the ranks of nurses. I'm glad that there are young people coming in to take the place of us oldsters who are retiring. I've been an RN for 42 years and am about worn out.

That's just laziness. That is as much a nurses job as anything else. I'VE DONE IT ALL FROMM EMPTING BED PANS TO DELIVERYING BABIES, wound care,draw blood, give chemo. Loved my nursing career. I MADE SURE I HELPED MY NURSES AIDS WITH CHANGING AND TURNING AND ALL THEIR JOBS IF THEY NEEDED ME. I could always depend on them when i was in a pinch. Every one is important. I'll get off my soap box now.

Congratulations on your graduation! Now get yourself to every sewing machine store you can find and try out every machine possible. You need to find out what options you like and and what machine YOU are comfortable working with. If it's a $1400 machine that you fall in love with, so be it. Enjoy!
