New Sewing Projects For The Holidays

I just got my connecting Threads mailer and I see that they have lots of interesting ideas for Christmas-Chanukah gifts. I particularly like their pattern for the 90-minute poncho pattern on pg 17. What are some of you making for gifts this year?

RedGarnet222 09-15-2024 10:10 AM

I have on the ready, butcher aprons and a couple couch quilts. I thought about hot pads to go with the aprons, but I will finish the things I need to first finish and then think about those.
Oh, I have a quilt top ready to finish for a diabetes charity event I need to get on. It is due in the beginning of december.

Am assuming you bought the 12 days of Christmas set, but she also has some other lovely patterns. Some of them would make beautiful collectible ornaments or even a tree topper. Thanks for the link and another great idea to add to my growing "to do" list.

I"m working on 3 quilts. Two for my cousin's adult children and one for my dear friend who I adopted my Loki from.

I'm making calendars with pictures of my quilts for each month this year. I did it about 10 years ago, and they were a hit. It's a good way for me to remember quilts I've made and given away, too. I will also use orphan blocks to make some hotpads for neighbors, perhaps with a loaf of bread to go along.

I purchased a panel with a giant stocking. It can be used as a gift bag or hung by the chimney with care in hopes that St. Nick will fill it to the top! :) I have the Santa in the Trees pattern in the works.

I'm definitely interested in what new things you are sewing! Sometimes people don't need things anymore and it's nice to surprise them with something they didn't expect that they actually love!

I’ve been doing pillows and table runners for years — usually appliqué. Think I may switch it up this year and make candle mats.

Some wonderful ideas. Thanks for sharing.

That poncho is cute. I don't get CT's mailers anymore, but was able to find it online. But, what is "floofy"? Is it their brand of minky? I'm thinking maybe I could do it with a nice flannel, instead. And... it could maybe be modified for children's car seats. The no winter coat rule seems crazy here in the northeastern US.

Not really planning to make any gifts this year, other than possibly a runner for a dear friend.

How fun is that … do you print them yourself or send off for printing?”

I use Shutterfly where I upload pictures and then create the calendar. Unfortunately, I have been too busy with other things so I think they will have to be New Years gifts!

Thanks for the idea! I went to Shutterfly and started designing a quilt calendar! They are discounted to about $26 right now!

This is probably the first year in a long time I haven't had Christmas projects although I did just order some cute toweling fabric on Etsy to make kitchen towels.
I've been knitting up a storm. Making scarves for my kids and to donate too. Ohio is getting cold. My middle son saw the one I was working on and loved it so I know which one he's getting.

Onebyone 11-27-2024 07:18 AM

I made one these for each member of my friend quilting group. There are six of us. Connecting Threads has a pattern that looks similar. I don't know if there is enough difference between the two to make a difference.

Have you seen this? Perfect for the bias binding for the oven mitt pattern: https://www.facebook.com/reel/893258185652558

sewbizgirl 11-27-2024 10:42 AM

Onebyone, thank you for that video on cutting bias strips an easier way!

I have not been making Christmas presents this year. All purchases!! It's so freeing and there is no deadline to finish, as with handmade gifts. Everyone in the family has enough quilts. I may whip up some pajamas for the gks if I find I have time, but I've bought enough other gifts that it won't matter if I don't get to them.

SusieQ, I would love to see the scarves you have been knitting! Please post a picture.

Here you go! Thanks for asking.

I didn't combine yarns as it may look. They were multicolored yarn. The one on the far right is soooo soft!

Almost forgot- Happy Thanksgiving everyone!!!

annievee 11-27-2024 02:26 PM

So nice, great knitting!

sewbizgirl 11-27-2024 04:31 PM

Those are beautiful, Sue! Thanks so much for taking pics for us. So, is that a reversible pattern... cables on both sides? They are laying so nice and flat. I have so much yarn that is just one or two balls. I need to make some scarves too.

Onebyone 11-28-2024 08:15 AM

Beautiful knit scarves. Who wouldn't want one of those!
