I understand. I have been handquilting an oversized queen quilt off and on for 3-4 years. Just about ready to put it on the machine! I just saw one in a magazine made without batting. Just top and backing. I think my next personal quilt will be like that! I'll call it a "summer quilt". It will work well for me since I live in Florida! And I'm just starting a cathedral windows quilt that has no batting at all, when it's sewn, it's done!!

I hand quilt and I use sheets for backing, I don't have any problems with them. I do wash new sheets first, just to soften them a bit.

Prewashing flannel is a must, it does shrink. Most people say to wash and dry on hot at least a couple of times.
