I have a friend who loaned me a pattern for a New York Beauty because she was having trouble getting it to all fit together. I tried to do it and I think most of it worked. I must have made a mistake on one or two of the squares cut into diamonds on the border, because the points are wrong on a couple of them, but mostly I was satisfied. I used silks and lame fabric for a sparkle. I don't know how to quilt the border. What would you use for marking quilting lines on this, I think chalk will brush right off. I need to really be able to see it!

justme 12-18-2009 03:57 PM

I use chalk and hair spray to set it, check it on a piece of extra fabric to make sure it doesn't harm the fabric, there are pens that you can buy also, that disappear after a while, just don't get tooo ahead of the game with those... ask me how I know... good luck and can't wait to see some pictures
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

 oh is that pretty, love your color choice!

kluedesigns 12-18-2009 07:56 PM

the quilt is beautiful.

i would play off the art deco design of NYC - google empire state building and the chrysler building amd look at the images to get inspired.

once you know what you'd like to do you could trace the design onto golden threads paper and pin that to the top and quilt thru it.

the paper rips away with great ease.

CrystalKicks 12-18-2009 08:13 PM

pretty I also love the colors!!

I recently had the same problem trying to mark a dark maroon batiq border. I found a marking pen that worked great for me. Chalk was no good, as I hand quilt, and the chalk just doesn't stay with all that bouncing. The pen I bought is a white marker, very fine point, and is removed by ironing, although the quilting stitches covered up that line, so I did not bother ironing it. It is made by Clover, but I see no name on the package except "white marking pen-fine" I think I bought it on connecting threads web site, although I did see one in Joann's the other day. I was really pleased that I could mark the border all in one shot on a flat surface, instead of trying to mark every three inches or so as I went along. I don't know if this will help you finish your beautiful ny beauty, since the fabric you used is satin and maybe cannot be ironed. I think the price was around 6 dollars.

Wow! That is beautiful! I live in the state of New York and would love to make that as a wall hanging. Any chance that the pattern was paper pieced? That's about the only way that I could manage it. Also, how large is the finished piece? Again, that is truly magnificent.

marta 12-19-2009 08:24 AM

Beautiful! That is one of my favorite patterns.
I made a table topper for our daughter when I just started back in quilting. I could, or course, see lots of things that needed touching up, but she loves it, so that is what counts.
I am glad to know about hair spray on chalk to get it to last for a marking tool.
Great, and thanks for sharing!

You ought to check out some of the NY beauties some of ladies on this site have made. I have the pattern and can hardly wait to start one of my own. I have a couple projects I need to finish first.

Nita, If you're interested in paper piecing, you should check out a book called "Karen K. Stone Quilts". There are several New York Beauty patterns in it, including the actual pattern for her 'Cinco de Mayo' pattern (shown on the cover) which makes a 12" block. If you want to use her pattern for the 12" block, you can easily trace directly from her paper pattern, included in the book. I found using tracing paper works better than regular paper for the printer, as it tears away easier. I made a quilt using this pattern and made a quilt that's about 5' X 6'. You can stick with her blocks or you can easily mix and match the different components to come up with your own original blocks. I did some of both. Paper piecing is the only way to go with this pattern. Getting those sharp points is so easy and each block turns out so close to the same size.

I am not an experienced quilter by any means and am not familiar with this pattern, however, the block shown looks like Lady Liberty's crown. Maybe you could quilt the statue of liberty or parts of the statue in the border.

You did a great job! I love the sparkle and pop of the fabrics. Yummy!

I agree with Klue about the quilting design for the border. And the gold paper is wonderful stuff!!!

I would suggest marking the borders with the white Sewline chalk pencil. They are amazing and so easy to use!! It looks like a mechanical pencil. My girlfriend has the white one and has let me try it and I have a yellow one. I haven't tried the red or blue chalk pencils but the white and yellow are so amazing it makes me want to get the other colors and never use anything else again! The lines stay but you can easily wash or erase them out. I have brushed them out but I tend to mark a bit hard when marking my lines and it's easier to simply wash them out when I wash the quilt after it's finished and I'm ready to block it.

This is beautiful! where can I find the pattern?

Sparky 12-19-2009 12:46 PM

It is partly paper pieced. The first block is about 9 1/2 inches, border 2 and 3 are 2 inch and the outside border 4 1/2". These are all unfinished dimensions, so I think that is 23 inches. It is a published pattern. Fiesta by Lynda Milligan and Nancy Smith. It is sold in quilt shops or online. www.possibilitiesquilt.com
The main pattern is 46X64. I think I will try that next.

sewmuchfun 12-19-2009 03:43 PM

Thanks for the info. will try to work on this after the holidays.

mosher92 12-19-2009 04:20 PM

nita, I have a book with paper pieced NYB in it if you would like me to snail mail a copy to you I could do so. I think I could email too but by the time i got all that figured out the snail would have made it to you house and back to mine I am afraid. Anyway pm me your address if you are interested.

amocha1 12-19-2009 08:31 PM

This came out great.

Sheree from Chicago 12-19-2009 09:34 PM

It really is beautiful. My very first and most favorite quilt is New York Beauty by Karen Stone. I love the sparkle you added with the lame. What is that like to work with? Thanks for sharing this beautiful quilt!

Sparky 12-20-2009 01:52 PM

I didn't have any trouble with either the silks or lame, I used a little lower heat setting of course. I found that by using a very lightweight fusible web on the back they do not stretch or fray. I would recommend it. I'm not making something that is going to be thrown in the washing machine, and I don't know if it would work for that type of quilt.

amma 12-20-2009 02:24 PM

Thank you for all of the tips for working with these fabrics :D:D:D

I use that pen all the time, and love it! If the fabric cannot be ironed, the marks can also be removed with water...it doesn't take much. The price at Joann's is usually around $6.00, but that's a great item to use your 40% coupon on! Connecting threads had the pens on sale earlier in the year. The price was even better, so I stocked up a little. I have also seen them in the Newark Dressmaker Supply catalog, and I believe the Clotilde catalog also had them.

deranged_damsel 12-20-2009 05:44 PM

ITS BEAUTIFUL!

is the one border strip on backwards???

Sparky 12-21-2009 08:56 AM

There is something different from the pattern. I sewed all the patches in the same direction, I think I should have reversed some of them. Or I should have sewn all of them before attaching the first row which is wrong. It was the only way I could make the color right. It's not that important for how I'm using this to worry about. But next time I'll try to make it work as intended.

Iluv2quilt 12-21-2009 09:22 AM

Oh that's really pretty. Chalk doesn't come off as easily as you'd think, I always have to rub it off.

If I use a chalk wheel I find the chalk usually bounces right off when I'm quilting, but the chalk pencils I have to scrub off. I do mark pretty hard though, which is likely why I have to wash it several times or use an eraser or wet rag to scrub it off.

thats great! I have a really hard time looking at my work... it can ALWAYS look better! I need to learn a bit of your point of view :)
I used to put a messed up square into every quilt on purpose! just to prove to myself that it didnt HAVE to be perfect :)
and have gone back to my old pefectionist self again
"messing up is part of quilting, RIGHT" I repeat to myself.....

Sparky 12-21-2009 03:07 PM

Call it creativity and you will feel better about yourself.

Actually, I see nothing wrong with wanting to make a 'perfect' quilt. We are all striving to get better at quilting, right? I'm a perfectionist - but only when it comes to my own work. I don't expect others to live up to my expectations, esp when I can't live up to them. I actually hate that expression, "If you can't see it from a galloping horse at ten feet away" - mostly because I will never be running past a quilt. I notice the mistakes, but as long as they are not mine I'm not bothered by them. As for my own work, I strive to do the best I can and when I don't meet my expectations (which is often), I then tell myself to live with the results. And most others don't notice things the way I do, but I think we all do that with our work. There is nothing wrong with striving for perfection. And when I don't meet it, I tell myself that only God is perfect. ;)

Love your sparkly piece! I am in awe of finished tops!

There's going to be a free class this month at the Quilted Hill in Yamhill on finishing borders and bindings, you might get help there. (I think a class is coming up on NY Beauties, too)

JustMe - do you wash out the chalk and hairspray when done, or does it cover up? can't quite get the concept in my head, but it sounds like a great idea.

knlsmith 02-06-2010 01:10 AM

Those are some SHARp points. Excellent job!
