I've dug out several quilting projects that I've started over the years and have settled on a simple quilt of a pre-printed cotton tapestry from India for starters. The batting has been ordered and is on its way.

Here's my question. I have some 10 yards of 54" doeskin, probably a poly blend. I'm thinking of using this as a backing. I know lots of people go cotton all the way but I'd like to use up what I have on hand. What pitfalls do I look out for with non-cotton backing?

Thanks for your help!

Sue

You should be okay as long as any cotton or shrinkable material has been preshrunk.

Sadiemae, wasn't there also an issue with doing the quilting with poly-blends?

I have used poly blends with no problem but I do machine quilt.

the only issue i know of is it is very difficult to hand sew through...other than that poly blends work wonderfully in quilts and quilt up beautifully.

I'm intending to machine quilt the tapestry quilt. It's intricate enough to make quilting interesting but with some open spaces that I'll machine embroider.

Thanks to all for their comments. I'm feeling comfortable now with using the poly blend as a backing.

Go for it! Just wash your cottons first :D:D:D

Poly is fine. I use it for my backings all the time.. Never had a problem..
