Newbie needs help selecting fabrics

Hello, I just started quilting last year and love it. My favorite blocks to make are the Civil War-era designs. Can anyone recommend a good reproduction fabric to buy? The only ones I seem to like are the Kansas Troubles fabrics. But I would like to try something new. The fabrics that come up as "1800s reproduction" on the big on-line sellers' websites are not attractive. Too flowery or too bright or just not right.

Does anyone one have a suggestion of a nice fat quarter I can buy?

Thanks!

talk to frank on e-bay at franks11. tell him what you want (plain, nonflowery civil wars ) He won't understand what you mean by "just not right", nobody does,.....so try to be specific. He will pickout a bunch for you and mail them to you. Ignore the pictures on the website...he hasn't changed them in years and even mixes pictures up. But his fabrics are nice. Don't just order on line....TALK to him.

Marcus Brothers usually has a good selection of reproduction of Civil war fabrics. Most LQS carry some of their fabrics..

Patsfatquarters, also on EBay, has sent my some very nice ones. She actually lists civil war FQ bundles. I've ordered from her several times and always been pleased.

A couple years ago I bought bunches of the Civil War Jubilee line. I loved many of those fabrics, still do. Look at what's for sale online at The Fat Quarter Shop and ReproductionFabrics.com.

Hi, and welcome to the Board. Keepsake Quilting has a 40 piece fat qtr. collection of Civil War reproduction fabrics kinda pricey, but pretty.

Welcome to the board! With regard to your question Barbara Brackman makes beautiful civil war reproduction fabrics. Check out Hancock of Paducah they have awesome fabric and prices are great. Good luck.

Jo Morton's designs for Moda are also very nice. You may like some of Edyta Sitar's lines (also Moda and branded as Laundry Basket) but her designs are very eclectic and some are very floral.

Here are some links for you

And don't always dismiss something you consider too bright. A little pop of bright can really make a quilt sing and there are many CW repros that have just a touch of something bright in them.

Janequilter: thanks for pointing out Frank's11. I have scoured EBay for fabric sellers and never even seen his stuff, it's amazing that you can search and search and never know what you are missing. (Wonder how many other treasures are undiscovered...) I emailed him and he responds very quickly. Will probably order some batiks soon.

Just went and pulled out some of my CW repros. Most are Latimer Farms by Paula Barnes for Marcus, purchased on EBay from patsfatquarters. Here's a sampling so you can see what some of them look like...

Anything that Paula Barnes designs for Marcus Fabrics is wonderful. Her book, Tributes and Treasures, has some of the most beautiful patterns I've seen for reproduction fabrics.

Here's an online store: Two Bees and they are having a sale right now. Hope this helps.

A friend recommended a fabric line called "Aunt Grace". All her fabrics seem to coordinate and are beautiful.

Thank you to everyone for your great suggestions on civil war fabric. I found everything I needed at Marcus Brothers fabric. Paula Barnes is a wonderful designer, but my favorite by far is Pat Buda. I love all of her collections and have really stocked up. So thank you to everyone who recommended Marcus Brothers. It definitely has the best Civil War reproductions in my opinion!

I unfortunately had a bad experience with the eBay site Frank11. The reproduction fabric he sent was neither civil war nor attractive. He unfortunately refused to respond to any of my messages putting forth my dissatisfaction. So I cannot recommend that site. His feedback indicates that he has many satisfied customers, but I am not one of them.
