I am quilting for the first time. I am hand piecing blocks. When do a press the seams ( as I go, or when the block is complete)? How do I press the seams (steam, no steam, to one side - open??)

The block I am making has triangles in it and so the seam allowences hang out a bit here and there - someone called them bunny ears?? anyway - do I trim these all at once when I square the block or as I go for easier hand stitching??

Thanks very much!!

Hi Dutchgirl. When I do hand piecing, I usually finger press each seam, then press the block when it is finished. I clip off the "bunny ears" as I go along. Hope this is of some help.

I usually press the seams as I go. Like get two pieces sewn together and then press the seam before sewing it to another piece. As far as what direction to press them in, I think its a matter of preference. If you press your seams to the side, press towards the darker fabric if you have a light and a dark fabric together.

I love triangles, and have three quilts with these variations.
So I joined all triangles, cut, then pressed them all, and cut the ears off when I was joining them again. I found it went fastest this way.
