You will likely do fine on piecing the quilt top if you go with a simple pattern. Where you might get overwhelmed is quilting that large of a piece unless you have a sewing machine with a really big harp. I have not made any over a double/full size quilt and sent it out to a long arm pro. If you make a king size you might consider doing the same until you have a little more experience quilting some smaller quilts.

I like to use a 45 inch square quilt with the bride n grooms name on the center square with their wedding date. It makes a nice banner to hang up and a lap quilt afterward. Some have had people sign the back with a fabric marker as well. It is called Speedy Baby II and it is quick. You just google it and print out the pdf free pattern.I like it because it gives you all the sizes to cut out and it is very versatile.

Thanks everyone. My mother in law does quilts by hand and so we have talked about it and I will attempt to do the top and she will help me finish it all up by hand. Thanks for the honest advice and warnings and tips. :)

In that case, I think you have a great resource in your mother-in-law. She should be able to help you every step of the way, I think. I hope she's close by. Welcome, new quilter! Enjoy the journey!
