NICU Quilt Isolettes Needed
 

Since there were several responses about NICU sewing (to my post on the subject of shrinking cotton batting for a NICU quilt), I thought I would share a project that all NICU's do need.

Preemies are in what is called an isolette. NICU's across America all need quilted covers for their isolettes.

I could only find one website which had patterns for quilted isolette, but no details on where to send them:

There are lots of website postings from quilt guilds & quilt shops posting about sewing isolette covers, but it was hard to find any organization other than local chapters across the U.S.

Doing a Google search, I came across several news articles referencing quilt guilds/quilt shops making & donating quilted isolette covers to NICU's, but no central site except "Evie G’s Sunshine Factory" which appears to be a very new organization.
This would be a good project for quilt guilds or quilt shops

I sew for our children's hospital and will add this pattern to my list of possibles. I like the fact that the quilt as the panels. I worked in medical for almost 30 years and had never found a blanket that works as well as this one looks. Most were a solid piece and almost always could not be tucked under on at least one side. This pattern looks like it will not only keep the baby warm but will also allow for tubing.

Just remember 1 NEVER--Don't use felt of any thickness. NOT even as a batting. I sked my source if it would work as a batting and she said ABSOLUTELY NOT.

As with any items made for an organization, I would suggest that you check with them first for their particular requirements. I have made isolette covers for my local hospital NICU and here are their requirements:

*Washable materials: cotton, flannel or fleece
*Bottom Layer - a dark fabric that is black or navy
*Top Layer- any baby friendly pattern & color
*Quilted thick enough to block light
*Size - 40 X 50 inches or 50 X 60 inches (Yes that seems large but it must completely cover the isolette to block out light.)
*Durable to last through hospital laundering
**No tied quilts
**No tied (no sew) fleece blankets
**Do not embellish with ribbons, button etc.

I also suggest checking to see it their is a need for additional quilts. I checked a couple of weeks ago and my local NICU did not need any additional isolette covers. (My assumption is that a local guild or group has made a number of covers and the need is met currently.)

I couldn’t find any either when I was looking so spent a lot of time figuring out dimensions and what features NICUs need the most, but am quite new to quilting so if there’s anything that could make the instructions better please let me know!
