Nine Patch Challenge

Our Quilters Guild has given us the challenge of taking a 12.5 inch nine patch square which we then have to create a 14.5 inch mini quilt from it. We can add our own fabrics in any way we want as long as something of the original is there to be seen.

Has anybody any ideas of what I should do. A duplicate of the original nine patch will be available to compare with once our mini quilts are finished.

I am stumped as to how to go about this.

Make a disappearing 9-patch out of it with sashing and borders to bring it to the correct size?

What a great question apiarist - I will follow this thread for some ideas. Thank you.

Can you post a photo of what you are starting with?

Are you making your own 9-patch block?

Is everyone in the group getting/starting with the "same" 9-patch block?

Are there "rules" that you are supposed to follow? Can you cut and reassemble? Remove squares and replace them with other units?

Cut it on the diagonal and put sashing between those triangles to make it the right size?

My guild is having a block challenge too. My block is different black and white fabric, strip pieced in 2 1/2" strips. I am cutting the block to make stems for pieced flowers. We have to use all block given to us in anyway we want to make a new quilt, any size. We can add as much fabric as we want. Challenges are fun. I love to see all the results.

I don't remember where I found this link (could very well have been on this forum), but I fell in love with it. It's made with 16-patch, but could adapt to 9 patch.

Would love to see what you end up with. Sounds like a fun challenge.

This lady has some great ideas for slicing things up. Maybe you could get an idea from one of her videos?

You could turn it to a D9P then cut it diagonally once or a few times
and add more fabric and come up with something very interesting.

grammy, do you mean the Youtube video? Because you commented on this thread, the thread will show up if you click on "Quick Links" in the banner at the top of a QB page, under "subscribed threads".

We have to make two identical 9 patch blocks. These are then handed into the Guild. One will be retained by the organisers for future reference and the second one will be put into a lucky dip for another guild member to agonise what to do with it. We can do whatever we like with the 9 patch so long as at the end of the day it will be displayed alongside the original.

So you get someone else's 9-patch to work with for the challenge?

On my computer, I need to go to the first page of Quilting Forum; find my name at the top and click on that; then click on latest posts. All posts on which I have commented will be listed and I can go to the one I need by clicking on it.

This is so cool! I love seeing all the variations. Very inspiring!

I would cut the 9 patch apart, and miniaturize it. Then do a "hidden pictures" and put it back in the block (like a decoration on a vase or a tiny wall hanging in an applique block, or the "center" of a sunflower.) Good luck, would love to see your final block. Jane

This sounds like a lot of fun.....great way to get the creative juices going......and how much fun for a whole guild to work on.....I am always amazed at the way other people's minds work and how better to see than: "this is what I started with and this is what I ended up with!!"
